Ward Overview

Ward 7B is a 28‑bedded renal transplant and nephrology ward caring for patients with acute and chronic renal failure, offering haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis modalities.

Qualifications
  • Enthusiastic, good communicator, good organisational skills and strong teamwork ability.
  • Preferred experience in haemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis; training will be provided where experience is lacking.
Responsibilities
  • Participate in maintaining a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for all patients and carers and maintain agreed standards of nursing care.
  • Determine nursing priorities and plan patient care.
  • Inform the nurse in charge when changes in circumstances may affect patient care.
  • Maintain nursing records in accordance with the NMC and Trust guidelines.
  • Contribute to the development of Essence of Care and clinical benchmarking within the unit to improve patient care quality.
  • Ensure due regard is given to customs, values and spiritual beliefs of patients.
  • Provide information and support to patients/carers, ensuring all involved are aware of changes in the patient's condition.
  • Assist in the safe custody, checking and administration of drugs.
  • Develop clinical knowledge and skills to care for acutely ill patients admitted via both planned and unplanned routes.
  • Undertake expanded practice under supervision to optimise patient care in accordance with ward/department and Trust policies.
  • Involve patients and carers in the planning and delivery of care.
  • Ensure effective lines of communication within the ward/department multidisciplinary team.
  • Ensure equipment is checked and maintained in safe working order.
  • Manage allocated workload and provide supervision of less experienced staff.
  • Practice and promote safe and efficient use of all resources.
  • Report all incidents, accidents and complaints to the unit manager and complete Trust incident forms in accordance with risk management policies.
  • Ensure compliance with Trust policies and procedures.
  • Maintain own standards in relation to clinical governance.
  • Provide leadership in monitoring standards of care.
  • Act as shift coordinator in rotation with other nurses in the team.
  • Work as a member of the multidisciplinary team and undertake delegated tasks from the ward sister/charge nurse.
  • Adhere to the NMC’s Code of Professional Conduct at all times.
