The post holder will be responsible and accountable for the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of nursing care on a busy diabetes ward. The role involves working as a member of the multi-disciplinary team, undertaking delegated tasks from the ward manager/charge nurse, and following the NMC Code of Professional Conduct. After successful completion of the foundation gateway, the post holder will be required to take charge of a ward/department for a span of duty.
MainDuties of the Job
Key duties include:
- Assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of nursing care on a busy diabetes ward.
- Carrying out blood glucose and ketone monitoring.
- Supporting the multi-disciplinary team and following delegated tasks from the ward manager or deputy ward manager.
- Ensuring compliance with the NMC's Code of Professional Conduct.
- Participate in maintaining a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for all patients and carers and maintain agreed standards of nursing care.
- Determine nursing priorities and plan patient care, informing the nurse in charge of changes that may affect patient care.
- Maintain nursing records in accordance with the NMC and Trust Guidelines.
- Maintain and improve quality of patient care through contribution to the development of Essence of Care and clinical benchmarking within the unit.
- Ensure due regard is given to customs, values and spiritual beliefs of patients.
- Provide information and support to patients/carers and ensure all those involved in the care are aware of changes in the patient's condition.
- Assist in the safe custody, checking and administration of drugs.
- Develop clinical knowledge and skills to care for acutely ill patients admitted via both planned and unplanned routes.
- Undertake expanded practice, under supervision, to optimise patient care in accordance with ward/department and Trust policies.
- Involve patients and carers in the planning and delivery of care.
- Ensure effective lines of communication within the ward/department multidisciplinary team.
- Registered Nurse, current NMC registration
- BSc in Nursing (Diploma in Nursing as a minimum)
- Practice Assessor/Practice Supervisor Training
- Recent clinical nursing experience as a student or as a registered nurse
- Evidence of maintaining a clinical learning environment
- Experience with in relevant clinical setting
- Evidence of working with learners
- Knowledge of current nursing issues and clinical governance
- Demonstrates awareness of own limitations
- Ability to organise workload and delegate tasks appropriately
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Ability to support less experienced staff
- Ability to problem solve
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Basic IT skills, including e-mail and word processing
