About the Unit

The Clinical Eye Research Centre within Ophthalmology at the Liverpool University Group is a purpose-built unit facilitating clinical trials and studies in all aspects of eye research.

Role Overview

Lead Research Nurse to play a key role in a team working at the heart of ophthalmic research across Royal and Aintree sites.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee a wide range of studies in various ophthalmic conditions, working closely with the University and participating in all phases of clinical trials.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Director of Research to meet delivery targets, supported by senior R&I Managers, Matrons and the Clinical Eye Research Business Team.
  • Provide day‑to‑day operational leadership and management to deliver the portfolio of studies, overseeing research practitioners and support staff.
  • Manage human and research resources and projects to ensure effective running of research services in line with best practice.
  • Organisation and co‑ordination of multidisciplinary team members, including photographers, optometrists and consultant staff, to carry out clinical trials.
  • Arrange patient appointments in accordance with study timelines and ensure adherence to study protocols.
  • Collect and manage patient information within databases, coordinates study monitoring visits for the review of data for clinical trials.
  • Conduct weekly meetings to develop working practices within research programmes.
  • Undertake patient satisfaction surveys and audit treatment outcomes in terms of visual acuity and quality‑of‑life measurements.
  • Complete applications for research grants in the field of poor vision and quality of life, impacting patients with age‑related macular degeneration.
  • Set up and organise a specialist research nurse interest group to promote nurse‑led services.
  • Lead research activities across Aintree and Royal sites, with flexibility to work across all areas within Ophthalmology.
Additional Context

Strategic, operational and clinical functions within the Research Unit include coordination of new research studies, development of research proposals, and collaboration with professional groups to provide clinical leadership at St Pauls Eye Unit.
