Overview

35 hours per week, 47 weeks per year, Permanent. Deans Community High School is seeking to appoint a highly motivated and dynamic individual who is committed to improvement and excellence.

The successful candidate will support the vision for the school and implement strategies to achieve this vision. This is a key post which comes at an exciting time for education in the school. Deans Community High School is a comprehensive non-denominational school situated in the Deans area of Livingston and serves a cluster of five primary schools. The school roll is currently 967 and is a very supportive environment with a relentless focus in driving up standards.

The School provides a broad education for young people from first year through to sixth year. The school offers a full curriculum.

The successful candidate will have the necessary experience and leadership skills to lead a team and assist in taking forward the principles of Curriculum for Excellence in order to support the improvement agenda of the authority.

Effective learning and teaching is the core business of all staff. It is, therefore, essential that all staff set high expectations to encourage young people to be all they can be in order that they achieve their full potential. This will allow them to leave school as effective contributors, successful learners, confident individuals, and responsible citizens. Pupil learning is key, and we encourage all pupils to be involved in the wider life of the school.

As a Community School we have outstanding facilities. These include sports facilities such as swimming pool, an all-weather pitch, dance and drama studios, theatre, as well as ICT suites and multi-media Library. These are all available to our pupils during the day and after school.

This post is considered Regulated Work with Vulnerable Children and/or Protected Adults, under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. Successful candidates will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme Update check prior to commencing employment and the cost will be met by the candidate.

The fee for a Full PVG Scheme Membership is £59 or Existing Member is £18. The £59 cost (where appropriate) will be deducted from your salary over a 1 or 3-month period by repayment schedule. If your employment concludes before the amount is re-paid in full, the outstanding balance will be deducted from your final salary.

Headship and eligibility

After 1 August 2020, Education Authorities can only appoint the following categories of people as permanent Head Teachers:

  • People who have achieved the Standard for Headship.
  • People appointed as permanent Head Teachers of a public school, a grant-aided school or an independent school on or before 1 August 2020.

A person who has not yet achieved the Standard for Headship may be appointed as a head teacher, provided the appointment does not exceed 30 months.

Qualifications

A relevant teaching qualification and registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland is essential.
