Position:An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Interstitial Lung Disease Nurse Specialist based at University Hospital Crosshouse / University Hospital Ayr. This post is offered on a permanent basis.
Hours:37 hours per week.
From 1 April 2026, the working week for NHS Agenda for Change staff in Scotland will be reduced. Full-time hours will reduce from 37 to 36 hours (pro rata for part-time staff) without loss of earnings.
UK Driving Licence:A UK driving licence is essential for this role.
What you will do:The ILD Clinical Nurse Specialist plays a pivotal role in delivering expert care to patients with interstitial lung diseases, including idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and other fibrotic lung conditions. This role supports patients from diagnosis through treatment and into palliative care, ensuring continuity, education, and high-quality clinical management.
Key Responsibilities:- Clinical Care:
- Provide specialist nursing assessment and care planning for ILD patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Lead nurse-led ILD clinics focusing on symptom management, oxygen therapy assessment, and treatment monitoring.
- Support patients through the entire disease trajectory, including palliative and end-of-life care.
- Perform and interpret oxygen assessments and other relevant investigations.
- Multidisciplinary
Collaboration:- Work closely with respiratory consultants, radiologists, pharmacists, physiotherapists, and palliative care teams.
- Attend and contribute to ILD multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings.
- Liaise with community respiratory teams and GPs to ensure seamless care transitions.
- Patient Education and Support:
- Provide education and emotional support to patients and their families.
- Develop and deliver patient information materials and support group sessions.
- Maintain a telephone advice line for ongoing patient support.

Knowledge, training and/or experience required for this post:- Registered Nurse (RN) with current NMC registration.
- Post-registration experience, with experience in respiratory care.
- In-depth understanding of ILD conditions, including idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, sarcoidosis, and other progressive pulmonary fibroses.
- Familiarity with national guidelines for ILD, COPD, asthma, and oxygen therapy.
- Knowledge of pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments, including side effect monitoring and symptom palliation.
- Understanding of diagnostic procedures such as spirometry, 6-minute walk tests, and blood gas sampling.
- Awareness of palliative care principles and supportive care needs for patients with chronic lung disease.
- Respiratory-related diploma or degree modules.
- Recognised spirometry training.
- Level 1 or 2 smoking cessation training.
- Palliative care experience.
