Job Overview:

Assumes responsibility for the performance of routine, standardized biological and/or biochemical tests, as well as more complex procedures on blood, urine, tissues, body fluids, and other specimens that assist physicians in the diagnosis and clinical management of patients. Recognizes results or problems that require referral to a Technical Specialist, Pathologist, or Administrative Coordinator. Performs additional tasks as requested by the Chairman of Pathology or his/her designee.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Knowledge of specialized principles and techniques in Blood Banking, obtained through formal academic training and experience.
  • Registry with a recognized board of registry for medical technologies, such as the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.
  • Successful completion of all Orientation Programs.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in medical technology is preferred.

Essential Functions:

  • Adheres to safety policies regarding the handling/disposal of specimens, chemicals, biohazardous materials, and sharps. Maintains a clean and safe work environment and ensures patient and professional confidentiality.
  • Answers telephone inquiries factually according to hospital guidelines.
  • Assumes in-charge responsibilities when assigned in the absence of the Technical Specialist or Senior Technologist.
  • Completes mandatory education promptly and participates in ongoing education activities.
  • Prioritizes work assignments, giving STAT requests top priority, and manages multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Communicates with physicians, nursing staff, technologists, clerical staff, phlebotomists, and students regarding specimen or result inquiries.
  • Determines specimen acceptability, resolves discrepancies with relevant personnel, and follows procedures accordingly.
  • Enters, deletes/adjusts, and orders in the Laboratory Information System based on requisitions or verbal requests; forwards requisitions for billing.
  • Maintains appropriate reagent and supply inventories, records lot numbers and expiration dates, and manages stock levels.
  • Ensures positive specimen identification throughout processing and testing; consults with specialists for unusual requests.
  • Performs and documents quality control procedures, records corrective actions, and notifies specialists of out-of-range results.
  • Reviews policies, procedures, and manuals periodically to ensure compliance; stays current with procedures; participates in training and orientation of new staff.
