Overview

The position assumes responsibility for the performance of routine, standardized biological and/or biochemical tests, as well as more complex procedures on blood, urine, tissues, body fluids and other specimens that assist physicians in the diagnosis and clinical management of patients. Responsibilities include recognizing results or problems that require referral to Technical Specialist, Pathologist or Administrative Coordinator. Additional tasks may be requested by the Chairman of Pathology or designee.

Qualifications

Required:

• BS degree in Medical Technology or Medical Laboratory Scientist with training in Blood Bank.
• New Grads Welcome

• National Certification

Essential Functions:

• Handles emergency situations, issuing uncrossmatched blood according to established procedure.
• Inspects/issues compatible blood for transfusion, and performs visual and temperature check on return blood; disposes improperly stored/labeled, punctured, outdated, contaminated or hemolyzed blood according to established procedures.
• Monitors blood inventory to ensure adequate supply, orders blood when needed; monitors inventory of reagents and other Blood Bank supplies and notifies Technical Specialist when supply is low.
• Participates in the training and instruction of students and Pathology residents assigned in the Blood Bank.
• Performs routine and standardized tests as outlined in the Procedure Manual (Group/Rh/Antibody Screen, Antibody Identification, Direct Antiglobulin tests, compatibility tests, phenotyping, elution, etc.); completes proper documentation.
• Performs special methods as outlined in the Procedure Manual and/or Technical Manual in resolving difficulties or multiple antibodies, ABO discrepancies, incompatible cross match; completes documentation.
• Performs transfusion reaction investigation, testing and documenting according to established procedure.
