Position: (1.0) Spanish Teacher

Position

Livonia Public Schools is seeking a highly qualified Spanish teacher who will be able to develop and sustain academically focused instruction for his/her students. The teacher will identify and implement best practices in instruction and student achievement, motivate each student to acquire knowledge in the Spanish language and culture, and develop skills in written and spoken communication.

District Overview

Livonia Public Schools employs approximately 1,900 staff members, serving approximately 13,300 students pre‑K to post‑secondary. The district includes 15 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, 3 high schools, 1 career technical center, 1 early childhood center, and 1 vocational and transition center. The annual budget is $175 million, with state funding of $9,608 per pupil.

  • Medical insurance, including prescription drug coverage:
    • The district’s contribution is the maximum allowed by Michigan law.
    • Family coverage eligibility for employees working 30 hours or more per week.
    • Single coverage eligibility for employees working 20 hours but less than 30 per week.
    • Optional “cash in lieu” of medical insurance for those who qualify.
  • Dental, vision, and life insurance:
    • The district pays 100% of the premium for all employees who have family coverage at 30 hours/week and single coverage at 20 hours/week.
  • Long‑term disability coverage:
    • The district pays 100% of the premium for employees working 20 hours or more per week.
  • Employee Assistance Program for employees and their eligible family members: confidential short‑term counseling service available 7 days a week at no cost.
  • Paid holidays; earned vacation, sick, and bereavement days.
  • Longevity pay.
  • Paid “act of God” days, such as snow days.

Additionally, children of employees living outside the district’s attendance boundaries are eligible to attend Livonia Public Schools via schools of choice if working more than 20 hours per week.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Spanish language.
  • Valid secondary Michigan Teaching Certificate.
  • Major in the subject area strongly preferred; minor required.
  • A passionate commitment to improving learning for all students.
  • Demonstrated positive interpersonal relationships.
  • Skills in individualizing instruction.
  • Evidence of ability to establish positive working relationships with all stakeholders.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills.
Major Functions and Responsibilities
  • Create a welcoming and positive classroom climate and culture.
  • Exhibit a commitment to the District’s Shared Vision and Collective Commitments.
  • Teach skills and knowledge in Spanish language instruction.
  • Develop a balanced instructional program incorporating demonstrations, lectures, discussions, and audio; organize class activities for optimal learning.
  • Adapt curricular materials and instructional methods to develop engaging, relevant, sequential lessons and assignments that guide and challenge students.
  • Provide individual and small group instruction to adapt curriculum to the needs of students with varying intellectual abilities, attitudes, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Develop an understanding and appreciation for the culture of countries where Spanish language is spoken.
  • Integrate school improvement goals into classroom instruction.
  • Maintain student classroom records using current online record keeping platform.
  • Communicate with parents, students, and school counselors through conferences and other means to discuss curriculum, assessments, and student progress.
