The City of Manistique is accepting applications for a Water Treatment Plant Operator. Employee will work under direct supervision of the Water/Wastewater Superintendent and will be responsible for all duties assigned to him/her which are necessary for the operation of the Treatment Plants. You will also be required to assist in the water distribution and sewer collections systems.

Starting rate is $24.86, position may be eligible for annual incentive pay and contracted increases as determined by the collective bargaining agreement, with opportunity for yearly salary increases.

Candidates must have and maintain a valid "F-4" State of Michigan drinking water operator certification and a valid "D" State of Michigan wastewater operator certification. A Valid S-4 water distribution certification is also desired by the city. Must have a valid driver's license. If transferring license from another state a provisional F-4 Drinking Water Certification must be obtained within 30 days, no exceptions (State Law).

Must obtain an F-4 Drinking Water Certification within 12 months, no exceptions (State Law).

The City of Manistique will offer training to help employee keep up to date on needed continuing education credits.

Typical Duties
  • Perform duties necessary for maintenance of building and grounds.
  • Perform general and preventative maintenance on site, as well as sewerage lift station and water tower sites.
  • Do chemical and bacteriological tests on water and wastewater samples.
  • Maintain records on water plant and wastewater plant operations (MO R's) and maintenance.
  • Interpret instrumentation, SCADA and gauge readings.
  • Collect water and wastewater samples.
  • Operate process controls, calculate filter rates, backwash rates, wasting rates and rotate process equipment as needed.
  • Be able to safely handle various process and laboratory chemicals.
  • Ability to troubleshoot plant and process pump hydraulic issues.
  • Load and unload chemicals either by hand, with equipment or chemical transfer pumps.
  • Ability to troubleshoot (600 Volt) medium (90 Volt) low AC voltage, (24 Volt) control and instrument DC voltage.
  • Operate the treatment plant in responsible manner as not to violate State of Michigan Laws; mainly PA 399 of 1979 as amended, and PA 451 of 1994 as amended.
  • Compute rates and adjust chemical feeds according to results.
  • Become familiar with the water distribution system, and wastewater collection systems.
  • Conduct safety inspections, follow safety rules for plant operations, and also participate in safety meetings.
  • Work some weekends and holidays, as well as answer call-out after normal working hours.

While performing duties on this job, the employee is regularly required:

  • Must be able to lift/move at least 50 pounds regularly.
  • Stand, walk, sit, crawl, bend, twist, squat, kneel, reach, pull, and compete repetitive movements.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include near and far vision, color vision, depth perception and the ability to focus.
  • May be required to work in trenches, tanks, or elevated areas.
