Medical Laboratory Scientist at Saint Joseph Mercy Health System

Employment Type: Part time

Shift: Day Shift

Location: Ann Arbor, MI

Under general supervision, performs qualitative and quantitative laboratory tests on patient specimens, according to established standards and practices. Analyzes test results and prepares samples for testing. Is knowledgeable of the principles and clinical significance involved in test procedures and uses this expertise daily. Demonstrates unit/area designated competencies.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Follows established procedures and policies to perform all tests relevant to the assigned section. Records and enters laboratory computer results of tests performed and advises supervisor of spurious, unusual or highly abnormal results before release of results for reporting. Reports results of tests ordered stat and highly abnormal or unexpected results in a timely manner according to established policies. Compares test results with previous patient test results when indicated, calling attention of supervisor or pathologist to unusual fluctuations.

Performs required quality control and equipment maintenance, calibrates and operates laboratory equipment used. Notifies appropriate personnel of problems such as unacceptable specimens, equipment malfunctions, and quality control aberrations. Prepares standards, reagents, and other materials used in testing. Contacts nursing unit or client office personnel regarding results and clarification of requests. Actively participates in department and section meetings, continuing education, in-service and quality assurance program.

Provides quality patient care considering age, developmental and cultural needs. Demonstrates unit/area competencies. Assists in training of technologists, technicians, lab assistants, clerical staff and others. Assumes Tech‑in‑Charge duties as assigned. Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict constructively. Helps identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in resolution. Maintains confidentiality of patient, physician, associate, and visitor information. Behaves in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values of SJMHS.

Assumes responsibility for safe performance of duties for personal safety and coworker safety and reports hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management.

Required Education, Experience and Certification/Licensure
  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in Medical Technology or Medical Laboratory Science.
  • May consider a bachelor’s degree in science with relevant laboratory work experience. Proof of educational transcripts must be submitted at time of application.
  • Relevant work experience in a medical laboratory is preferred.
  • Certification/Licensure preferred:
    Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory, or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) – ASCP or NCLS certification.
  • This position may also be listed as:

  • Interpersonal skills to communicate with physicians, nursing unit personnel, other clients, and laboratory staff while reporting and explaining results.
  • Analytical skills to interpret and analyze test results of complex or unusual procedures and determine appropriate action for abnormal results.
  • Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail while performing job responsibilities.
  • Organizational ability to perform various tests on large volume of samples with appropriate prioritization to ensure timely results.
