Position: MERCHANDISING ASSISTANT STORE MANAGER

Overview

Merchandising Assistant Store Manager in Training (MASM-IT) will gain hands-on experience in the key responsibilities and functions of a Specialty Assistant Store Manager at The Home Depot. The MASM-IT will undergo a comprehensive training program that includes hands-on experience, mentorship, and leadership development. Throughout their training, MASMs in Training will become familiar with Manager on Duty duties and will learn to oversee the various Merchandising departments (Garden, Hardware, Lumber, Building Materials, Plumbing, and Electrical) to ensure the successful execution of key programs that enhance customer service, product availability, and store presentation.

During the MASM-IT training period (up to 6 weeks), you will learn to execute MASM key responsibilities and collaborate with the Store Manager, Assistant Store Managers (ASMs), and Merchandising field teams to develop and implement strategies that boost sales and profitability, creating actionable game plans for departmental success and ensuring smooth department operations. You will be expected to lead by example and uphold all lawful company policies and positions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Customer Experience (15%):
    Supervise associates in selling efforts, lead GET culture, drive customer service and associate engagement, resolve customer concerns effectively, and take necessary actions to resolve situations promptly.
  • Operations Management (10%):
    Perform Opening/Closing Manager on Duty and other store-wide responsibilities. Adhere to Company policies and procedures, hold associates accountable, follow SOPs, ensure safety compliance, and mitigate shrink.
  • Safety (10%):
    Ensure self and associates follow all safety and hazmat procedures and Safety Matters guidelines at all times.
  • Sales and Productivity (15%):
    Plan merchandise placement, signing, and support stock integrity through inventory management. Learn to operate store equipment and systems and manage daily financial operations.
  • Training and Preparation for Assistant Manager Position (50%):
    Participate in a structured training program covering all aspects of retail store management, including operations, customer service, sales/profitability, and company policies. Learn staffing and scheduling, stock deficiency identification/resolution, supervising selling behaviors, resolving customer issues, supporting service needs for installed sales/special orders and product sales, and executing performance management and disciplinary processes. Complete all training modules and assessments.

  • This position typically reports to the Store Manager

Travel
  • Typically requires overnight travel less than 5% of the time.
Physical Requirements
  • Must continuously stand or walk; ability to lift/carry moderate weight (8–20 pounds) as needed.
Working Conditions
  • Located in a comfortable indoor area with infrequent unpleasant conditions.
Qualifications
  • Minimum:
    Must be 18 years of age or older; legally permitted to work in the United States; high school diploma or GED.
  • Preferred:
    Demonstrated ability to collaborate and work effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Experience:

    Minimum 1 year of work experience; preferred 3 years; leadership experience 3 years.
  • Certifications:

    None required.

    High school diploma and/or GED.
  • Preferred Education:

    Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a related field.
