Head of Economy and Climate

Powys is entering a once-in-a-generation period of opportunity. The successful candidate will help shape economic growth, climate leadership and the legacy of an unprecedented programme of major international and national events coming to the county in 2027, while driving delivery of the new GROW Powys Economic Strategy. The role leads a portfolio including major events, business growth, climate change, net zero, skills, planning policy and regeneration.

Salary: Head of Service 2 (£82,607 - £90,651 per annum)
Location: County Hall, Llandrindod Wells (agile working available)
Reporting to: Director of Economic Development and Growth

Powys is on the cusp of one of the most exciting periods in its history.

In 2027, the world will be watching as Powys hosts a remarkable programme of major events, including the Tour de France Grand Départ
, the National Eisteddfod
, and the International Six Days Enduro
, that builds on our fantastic events legacy of Green Man Festival and Royal Welsh Show
, creating an extraordinary platform to showcase our county to national and international audiences. These events represent a once-in-a-generation opportunity to drive tourism, investment, business growth and community pride.

At the same time, we have launched the ambitious GROW Powys Economic Strategy , setting out a vision for a stronger, fairer and greener economy built around innovation, skills, higher-value employment and sustainable growth.

We are seeking an exceptional leader to become our next Head of Economy and Climate and play a central role in delivering our vision.

This is more than a Head of Service role.

  • Lead the delivery of the Powys Economic Strategy and key regeneration programmes.
  • Maximise the economic and social legacy of major events in 2027 and beyond.
  • Champion business growth, investment and innovation across rural Wales.
  • Drive our climate, nature and net zero ambitions.
  • Shape places, communities and future development across the county.
  • Work with government, business, regional partners and communities to unlock opportunities for sustainable prosperity.

As a member of the Council's Senior Leadership Team, you will help provide strategic leadership for the organisation and influence decisions that will shape the future of Powys for generations to come.
