We are recruiting academic clinical fellows in Intensive Care to start in April 2026 for an initial period of four months. This is part of a one‑year training programme that may extend to allow completion of a core training curriculum in anaesthesia, entry into specialist training in anaesthesia or Intensive Care Medicine, and further academic development.
Glan Clwyd Hospital is located adjacent to the A55 in the centre of North Wales and offers free parking for staff. The role is based on a 1 in 8 on‑call pattern, with the following schedule:
- Long days: 08:30 – 21:00
- Nights: 20:30 – 09:00
These shifts are in addition to standard days 08:00 – 17:00 in ICU or operating theatres. ICU fellows will have opportunities to work in theatres to increase airway skills, and may rotate to theatres for a dedicated three‑month block to acquire an anaesthetic IAC (initial assessment of competency).
The pattern includes two weekends in eight (nights, days), with compensatory weekdays off. Base salary is supplemented by 50 % for unsocial hours and 10 days of funded study leave per year.
Responsibilities• Cover either the 3rd on call (ICU doctor with full airway training) or 4th on call (ICU doctor with basic airway training) in a 24/7 rota.
• Provide consultant cover in ICU, with 2 consultants present 08:00‑20:00 seven days a week and 1 overnight consultant resident if needed.
• Deliver anaesthesia for a wide range of surgical specialties, including maxillofacial, vascular, general surgery and others.
Qualifications & Requirements• UK qualified anaesthetist or intensivist applying for a core training programme.
• Welsh language is desirable but not mandatory; applicants speaking either Welsh or English are welcome.
• Interest in teaching and research, with a commitment to the North Wales School of Medicine and Health, may be considered for recognition through Bangor University’s honorary titles.
