Overview
The Department of Art + Design at Utah State University invites applications for a full-time, nine-month Assistant Professor position to serve as the 2-D Foundations Coordinator and Instructor. The successful candidate will possess a demonstrated record of effective teaching in foundational 2-D courses—specifically 2-D Design and Drawing I—within a university setting. The position requires collaboration with fellow foundation-level instructors to cultivate essential design and drawing competencies among emerging artists.
A strong commitment to student mentorship and academic success is also expected. The position is defined as 80% teaching, 10% research/creative activity, 10% service.
This is an Assistant Professor position beginning with the academic year anticipated to start in August 2026.
Job offer is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check.
Responsibilities- Coordinate and oversee the 2-D art foundation courses: 2-D Design, & Drawing I—including adjusting and adapting curriculum when needed, with potential to coordinate 3-D Design.
- Initial teaching load to include:
- 2-D art foundation courses including 2-D Design, & Drawing I
- Other art courses as appropriate to candidate’s specialties & department needs.
- Participate in the annual portfolio review of BS students.
- Mentor undergraduate student projects and grants (research, creative, and/or pedagogical).
- Attend the annual FATE conference.
- Serve on department, college, and university committees.
- Create and produce creative activity/research to remain current in the profession.
- Maintaining lab/classroom.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- MFA in a 2-D specific discipline (Drawing & Painting, Printmaking, Photography, Design).
- Demonstrated passion and dedication to student success.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and contribute constructively to a team-oriented environment.
- 2 or more years of teaching experience at the university level beyond graduate teaching assistant.
- Strong understanding of 2-D Design principles.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience advising/mentoring undergraduate students, especially original undergraduate research, creative projects, and educational initiatives.
- Record of creative output.
