Who are we looking for?

GHD is looking for an Acoustical Specialist to join our Waterloo office. The Noise team in Waterloo supports Clients with noise, vibration, and acoustical challenges in their projects relating to land development, detailed design and construction of buildings, industrial permitting, environmental assessments for infrastructure projects, etc. Clients include federal, provincial, and municipal governments / agencies, industrial facility operators, and land developers.

Working with an energetic and high performing team, this position offers a variety of work and will see you involved in:
  • Building acoustics for residential and institutional projects
  • Noise and vibration assessments for proposed land developments (residential, commercial, industrial, etc.)
  • Industrial noise permitting
Noise Responsibilities
  • Utilize acoustic modelling using CadnaA, EASE 5, etc. to predict acoustical performance
  • Coordinate and complete site inspections of active construction sites to ensure as-built conditions meet acoustical requirements
  • Coordinate and complete field work to collect sound and vibration measurements of sources such as industrial equipment and transportation corridors
  • Conduct acoustical field testing for building acoustics projects, including Apparent Sound Transmission Class (ASTC) testing
  • Assist with the conceptual design of acoustic treatments, architectural design upgrades, equipment noise controls, etc.
  • Preparation of technical reports, site inspection memos, and fee proposals
  • Aid senior staff in technical research
  • Collaborate with GHD’s enterprise Air & Noise Group, consisting of over 80 engineers and scientists across North America
What You Will Bring To The Team
  • Recent or upcoming graduates from a Bachelor or Master’s Degree program of Engineering in Chemical, Environmental, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering programs
  • Previous co-op experience or relevant work experience preferred, however, not a firm requirement
  • Ability to prepare technical reports in plain language addressing client and agency requirements
  • Strong organizational skills to handle multiple projects at the same time
  • Ability to complete work under tight deadlines when required
  • Works well independently as well as a part of a team
  • Experience and understanding of any of the following regulations and associated guidance documents would be an asset:
    Ontario Building Code, MECP D-series guidelines, MECP Guideline NPC-300; ASHRAE HVAC Fundamentals handbook
  • Willingness to travel/work on-site as a member of a team or independently completing field work
  • Willingness to work extended hours if needed, including weekends and holidays
  • No aversion to heights along with the ability to work in high noise areas (following all health and safety requirements)
  • Written and verbal communication skills are essential to this position. Strong emphasis will be placed on your ability to communicate clearly with your target audience, including fellow technical experts as well as non-technical clients.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills:
    Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Previous field experience is considered an asset
  • Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) member
  • Valid G driver’s license and access to a vehicle
  • Must have a valid Canadian passport
