Who We Are

London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) is a world-class academic health sciences centre located in the southwestern Ontario city of London. Just two hours from Toronto and two hours from Detroit, London features a beautiful and walkable downtown core located on the Thames River, a vibrant culinary scene and scores of activities that highlight local arts, culture and music. As one of Canada’s largest acute‑care teaching hospitals, LHSC delivers world-class care and experiences, built on our commitment to excellence in research, innovation, and learning.

In partnership with our communities, we design and advance healthcare to support the wellness of the populations we serve. LHSC delivers both local and regional services, including the Children’s Hospital, within a large geographic area. LHSC is known for its great people and great care, with a workforce of close to 15,000, dedicated to delivering the highest quality patient care while partnering with communities to transform health, one life at a time.

The

Opportunity

LHSC's Nursing Clinical Extern Program is seeking motivated nursing students to join our interprofessional clinical teams as Nursing Clinical Externs. This role offers a unique opportunity to gain meaningful, hands‑on experience in an acute care hospital setting while developing the skills and professional insight essential for future nursing practice.

As a Nursing Clinical Extern, you will work alongside interprofessional care teams, contributing to high‑quality, patient‑centered care at University Hospital and Victoria Hospital. This experience provides valuable exposure to the day‑to‑day realities of bedside nursing, team‑based care, and the operational flow of a large academic health sciences Centre.

The Clinical Extern role is designed to support your growth as a future nursing professional. You will build foundational competencies such as clinical communication, teamwork, collaboration, time management, and the development of therapeutic relationships with patients and families. Through supervised practice, you will gain insight into clinical decision‑making, care coordination, and the critical role nurses play within complex healthcare environments.

Clinical Externs work in the capacity of an unregulated healthcare provider and collaborate closely with unit nursing and interprofessional teams under the direct and/or indirect supervision of an appointed Regulated Health Provider. Under appropriate supervision, Clinical Externs may perform pre‑identified controlled acts authorized to nursing under the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA) of Ontario, when delegated by a nursing professional who is authorized to perform them.

These positions offer a valuable opportunity to strengthen clinical confidence, professional judgement, and readiness for transition into future nursing roles.
