Position Summary
Under the general direction of the Manager of Recreation Facilities & Programs, this position is involved in a diverse range of job activities including assisting with ice maintenance, record keeping, general building repair, special event set up and take down, and custodial duties. Overall, the Temporary Worker
- Arenas position is responsible for assisting to ensure that all facilities and equipment are safe, ready for use, as well as efficiently and effectively operated for the convenience and enjoyment of patrons and the public.
Specifically, the Temporary Worker
- Arena position aids in day-to-day maintenance for corporate owned and/or operated facilities consistent with corporate and department standard operating procedures. Assigned work locations may include the Joe Thornton Community Centre and Memorial Arena.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Custodial and Maintenance
- Assists other arena staff with the ongoing maintenance and operation of the facility.
- Responsible to carry out all daily, weekly and monthly housekeeping/facility maintenance requirements in accordance with prescribed departmental standards and procedures while ensuring accurate documentation is maintained in logbooks (daily maintenance binder and caretaker logs).
- Performs general care taking and maintenance duties in the overall facility such as cleaning floors, wet mopping, operating power cleaning equipment, cleaning glass, painting, replacing light bulbs, making minor repairs, collection and disposing of garbage both inside and outside of the facility.
- Assists with the cleaning of the interior and exterior of the facility including seating areas, change rooms, glass doors, arena glass, offices, gymnasiums, community halls, meetings rooms and washrooms.
- Communicates and assists with the maintenance of proper ice conditions and facility standards for ice and facility user groups including moving nets during ice flooding.
- Maintains washrooms, change rooms and associated areas daily in a sanitary condition including cleaning, disinfecting, removing garbage and replenishing supplies of toilet paper, soap, etc.
- Operates small tools/equipment in a safe and appropriate manner.
- Assists in hall and gymnasium set‑ups.
- Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.
Customer Service and Communication
Skills:
- Interacts and provides courteous and professional customer service to facility patrons and internal partners.
- Promptly reports all safety, program and participant issues to Operations staff or the Supervisor.
- Ensures that facility users act in an orderly fashion and follow facility rules, report problems to the Operations staff or the Supervisor.
- Responds to routine inquiries related to the use of the facility.
- Records and maintains accurate records of test and related equipment performance in appropriate logbooks.
- Maintains appropriate written work records including incidents and accident reports, time sheets and other documentation and sign off as required.
Health and Safety:
- Assists with ensuring safe access and exit to the facility by ensuring all entrances, walkways and exit doors are free of ice, snow or other debris.
- Responds to emergency clean ups and spills.
