Your Contribution to NRSIWe are looking for a locally‑situated, motivated individual with expertise in aquatic ecological field monitoring to join our growing team. The successful applicant will be based out of our Waterloo, Ontario office and will be expected to regularly participate in field monitoring activities for a variety of aquatic survey types throughout Ontario, as well as contribute to office‑based tasks. This role offers the opportunity to gain experience in fish and freshwater mussel identification, implement scientific methods, and collect and analyse data with a high attention to detail.
The position will report to one of NRSI’s aquatic project biologists or project leads.
- Assist field leads with a variety of field surveys for fish, benthic invertebrates, aquatic habitat and freshwater mussels.
- Take legible, well‑organised and detailed field notes.
- Communicate frequently and as required with project managers and other field staff.
- Provide occasional assistance with other field‑ or office‑related tasks.
- A degree or diploma in Biology or Environmental Sciences. Similar educational and field experience will also be considered.
Job Requirements
- Willing and able to travel for regular multi‑day field surveys, sometimes in remote locations, under inclement weather, in a variety of environmental conditions, and occasionally for long hours.
- Demonstrated accuracy and attention to detail, including the maintenance of well‑organised and detailed field notes.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Valid driver’s licence and over 18 years old to drive a rental vehicle.
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR certification.
- Experience completing surveys for fish, benthic invertebrates, aquatic habitat and/or freshwater mussels.
- Valid pleasure craft operator’s card.
- Experience driving a boat and trailering.
- A reliable personal vehicle insured for work purposes (authorised mileage will be reimbursed).
