The Tirona laboratory studies mechanisms of inter patient variability in pharmacokinetics and associated drug responses. Research foci include genetic, disease and regulatory control of drug metabolism and transport with impacts on tissue and whole-body disposition of medications. The laboratory is also involved in preclinical and clinical drug development. For this purpose, the laboratory employs molecular biological, biochemical and chemical techniques using cellular systems, animal models (mouse) and studies in humans.

The Research Technician will work under the direction of the Principal Investigator to support scientific research on the role of drug metabolizing enzymes and drug transporters in the pharmacokinetics through molecular, biochemical and bioanalytical techniques in cultured cells, mouse models and patient samples. The role will prepare and conduct various procedures and techniques following set protocols in the research laboratory. The Research Technician will provide technical assistance and advice to undergraduate and graduate students, and researchers in the Personalized Medicine laboratory on experimental procedures and equipment techniques.

The role will support the maintenance, troubleshooting and basic servicing of equipment and instrumentation related to the research.

Education:

• 4 year University Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Sciences

Experience:

• 2 years of experience working in a research-intensive laboratory environment including experience in cell models, molecular biological analyses, and quantitative bioanalytical analyses using LC-MS/MS

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Knowledge of, and ability in, cellular and biochemical assays and methods in drug metabolism and drug transport
• Knowledge of, and ability in, developing and conducting quantitative drug and toxin assays using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry
• Familiarity with methods for research design, implementation, and analysis
• Familiarity with preventative maintenance techniques and practices for laboratory equipment
• Excellent troubleshooting ability along with hands-on expertise in technical support
• Ability to follow formal processes and protocols with high attention to detail
• Ability to employ a systematic and efficient approach to work
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, meet tight deadlines and adapt to changing priorities
• Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite and Graph Pad Prism with the ability to learn and use software programs
• Ability to multi-task and maintain an organized and effective personal work environment
• Personable and courteous in working relationships with colleagues, students and the public
• Ability to identify key results from research and to summarize and draft reports on research findings
• Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve department goals
• Ability to work within a flexible schedule to accommodate the events and activities of the laboratory
