The Ministry of the Solicitor General, Ontario Provincial Police, Ontario Provincial Police, and Communications & Technology Services Bureau Commander are seeking a qualified individual to join our Deployed Unit. In this exciting, rewarding and challenging opportunity, you will provide technical expertise and support in the operation and maintenance of telecommunication systems in the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). This position requires the ability to work on a regularly scheduled on-call basis.

This is an operational position requiring a high level of engagement with members and stakeholders. The successful applicant will be required to report to their assigned OPP worksite to perform their duties in accordance with Ontario Public Service workplace policies.

About Us: The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is one of North America's largest deployed police services with more than 5,800 uniformed officers, 2,400 civilian employees and 830 Auxiliary officers. We provide essential services that ensure the safety and security of the people of the Province of Ontario. The OPP is a division of the Ministry of the Solicitor General, the largest operational ministry in the province with a presence in every community across Ontario.

We are the largest police service in Ontario and the second largest in Canada. The Communications and Technology Services Bureau (CTSB) is comprised of more than 1,000 dedicated uniform and civilian professionals who possess a wide variety of backgrounds, expertise, and technical skills. The challenge of meeting the needs of a provincial police service with over 9,000 uniform and civilian members in a province as vast as Ontario is significant.

About the job

To provide technical expertise and support in the operation and maintenance of telecommunication systems in the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements
  • A valid Ontario driver's licence.
  • Ability to pass OPP background security clearance.
  • Ability to work on a regularly scheduled on-call basis.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of evolving radio technologies and land mobile radio solutions used in public safety.
  • Knowledge of all telecommunication sub-systems and their inter-relationship, including microwave, mobile, portable and base radios and repeaters, diesel generators, standby and backup power systems, alarm reporting system, telephone and radio system switches, dispatch computer, communications consoles, voicemail systems, console and communications centre digital voice recording systems and archiving and network tie lines to ensure optimum operation of an emergency response system.
  • Ability to plan, schedule and prioritize own work.
  • Effective written, oral and interpersonal skills.
  • Analytical skills to assess a situation, carry out investigation and analysis, and make recommendations on need and feasibility for expansion, renovation, replacement or other corrective action.
  • Evaluative and problem solving skills to analyze condition, technical performance and capacity of existing system by isolating electrical, mechanical and software elements to determine their interaction and the nature of the problem; conduct research and analysis; identify and establish priorities to correct problems; and make repairs, replacing parts devising a new solution to the problem.
  • Interpret and apply new data/information, technology and design methodologies to telecommunications, operations and problems within OPP control.
