Position: ASSISTANT TRACK FOREMAN - Mini Tie Gang

Reporting to the Track Supervisor and Track Foreman, the Mini Tie Gang Assistant Track Foreman is responsible for managing and directing a crew of workers to successfully complete day-to-day tasks by meeting or exceeding corporate and project goals for safety, quality, profitability, and schedule, resulting in extreme customer satisfaction. The Mini Tie Gang Assistant Track Foreman will primarily be engaged in the installation of track ties throughout territories maintained by PNR Rail Works Inc.

When not installing ties, the Assistant Track Foreman and crew may be responsible for various other Track Maintenance activities, as required.

Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties
  • Embrace and promote our safety culture while adhering to industry and company policies and procedures.
  • Perform as the on-site Supervisor for the working crew responsible to complete the task assigned in the absence of the Track Foreman.
  • Pre-plan work activities with Track Foreman to develop best means and methods, including safety action plans and track protection requirements.
  • Review the work site on a minimum daily basis and consults with Track Foreman and or contractor’s representative to understand work being conducted, and any potential hazards to effectively communicate and document through task specific Job Briefings.
  • Takes responsibility for crew performance as it relates to company goals, safety audits, and following company policies and procedures. Initiates follow up action as necessary including training, orientation, mentoring, discipline, etc. in conjunction with the Track Foreman or alone in the absence of the Track Foreman.
  • Conduct task specific Job Briefings daily with crew to review track protection, production goals, performance feedback, safety and schedule, hazards, and to solicit feedback from the workers as required by PNR and/or Customer policy and procedure.
  • Responsibly operates company vehicles and ensures all daily maintenance and inspections of the units are completed.
  • Always maintains a dedication to safety by modeling, providing education and enforcing safe work practices and company policies and procedures.
  • Communicates with customer and ensures a high level of customer satisfaction.
  • Communicates with contractors or sub-contractors to coordinate work, goals, etc.
  • Performs any administrative duties related to proper documentation as per PNR Quality Management System.
  • Able to appreciate time sensitive duties, plan and execute accurately to achieve daily goals and production in a safe manner according to industry standards.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Required Skills and Qualifications
  • A minimum of 2 years related experience in the railway industry.
  • Knowledge of all aspects of track construction and maintenance.
  • Certified in Canadian Railway Operating Rules.
  • Ability to read and understand specific documents including schedules, standard railway plans and specifications.
  • Ability to work in a safety sensitive position directing work groups on live railway environments.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards, railway engineering safety regulations and safety precautions of the work being performed.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient use of computers, tablets etc.
  • Ability to keep records and to prepare work and time reports.
  • Ability to understand and efficiently carry out instructions.
  • Ability to supervise the work of others and clearly communicate instructions to crew.
  • Must have a valid Ontario class G driver’s license.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Works outdoors along the Railway right-of-way.
  • Frequently stands, walks, climbs, balances, lifts, bends, and moves objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Exposed to all weather conditions including very hot and very cold weather.
  • Exposed to loud noise.
  • Exposed to live track/trains and high voltage.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts.
