Location: Greater London
The opportunity
An established building services contractor is looking for a part-time Estimator to sit at the front end of every project, turning drawings and specifications into accurate, competitive quotations that win work and protect margin.
This is a genuine three-day-a-week role, not a full-time job squeezed into fewer hours.
The workload is built around roughly five to ten enquiries a month, so it suits someone who wants steady, focused work rather than a packed diary.
Some weeks run busier than others.
You would price predominantly mechanical works from drawings and specifications across commercial construction and fit-out projects, and where it helps, visit site to firm up the numbers.
Good estimating here rests on judgement as much as arithmetic.
Anyone can apply a standard rate.
An experienced estimator knows when two hours on paper is really an hour and a quarter on site, and where a price can safely come down.
A great deal of the value is simply knowing where to look.
The role would suit an experienced estimator winding down from full-time work who still wants to stay in the game three days a week, or anyone seeking real part-time hours without dropping their standards.
What you'll be doing- Price predominantly mechanical works accurately from drawings and specifications
- Visit site at tender stage, where the job allows, to inform and firm up your pricing
- Revisit pricing post-tender, trimming where a site visit or better information allows
- Prepare clear, competitive quotations and turn them around promptly
- Advise where a price can and cannot move, and explain the reasoning behind it
- Manage your own workload across the week with minimal supervision
- Provide support to the post-tender team to assist in procurement
- Accurate pricing that wins work without leaving margin on the table
- Quotations turned around quickly, so the business can move on live enquiries
- Sound calls on wheresite knowledge canbring a pricedown, and where itcannot
- Extensiveestimating experience in building services or construction(mechanical, plumbing,fit-out orsimilar)
- Ideally aback ground that came upthrough thetrade, from hands-onwork intoengineering and thenestimating, so you knowwhere real-worldcosts differ from thebook rates
- Sharp commercialjudgement on wheremargin sits andwhere a price can betightened
- Confidenceworking independently and owning your owndiary
- UK-based,with solidworkingknowledge of theUK marketand UK pricing
- Three days a week, with a suggestedsplit of one day in the office forface-to-face review and two days fromhome
- Office based in the Woodford Green area, ideally within acomfortable commute
- Fully remoteconsidered for the right person, withthe right set-up, as estimating lendsitself well to home working
- Flexible on exact days and happy to work aroundthe right candidate
- Start as soon assuitable
Genuinepart-time estimating roles with an established firm are rare.
This issteady, respected work that lets an experienced estimator keep their handin without the full-time grind.
Thework is varied, the judgement is yours, and the pace is sensible.
