The New York Times is continuing to expand its video journalism, identifying compelling visual stories across the depth and breadth of our report. We showcase the expertise of Times journalists on-camera, share urgent news updates, and produce on-the-ground reporting, pioneering Visual Investigations, and video podcasts.
We are looking for a video journalist to work with our daily news team with expertise in verifying user-generated content (UGC) and open-source reporting based in our London newsroom. The role will require the production of a wide range of videos from standalone on-site clips to short-form video news packages for social media platforms.
The ideal candidate has a track record of developing stories based on open-source reporting and has the ability to quickly react to breaking news stories, vet visual evidence and reveal new insights.
Responsibilities will include producing original videos driven by footage and visuals culled from open web and social platforms to help viewers understand complex news stories. You will collaborate closely with our newsroom live journalism team, reporter video and visual investigations teams, as well as with correspondents and editors across the International department.
You should be eager to innovate visual storytelling formats, thrive on collaboration and have strong editorial news judgment. Premiere editing experience and strong writing skills are a must. You excel under the pressure of newsroom deadlines and have a track record of juggling multiple projects at any given time.
This is a hybrid position based in London and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance. The role will report directly to the Senior Producer in London.
Responsibilities- Finding, verifying and acquiring user-generated content.
- Writing publication-ready summaries of learnings from verified visual evidence.
- Sourcing, scripting and editing live, breaking news, enterprise news video packages onsite and for social media.
- Producing for linear video and interactive formats.
- Using news wire services such as AP and Reuters to acquire material.
- Setting up and monitoring live feeds, and adding text and graphics as needed.
- Write attention-grabbing video headlines and summaries for videos on the website and social platforms.
- Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
- Significant and proven journalism experience (preferably in a digital video or broadcast newsroom).
- A strong ability to apply open-source research skills, including sourcing audio‑visual evidence from a variety of platforms; geolocation and chrono‑location; satellite imagery analysis; video synchronization; and mapping out critical incidents using visuals.
- Can edit quickly and accurately with Adobe Premiere Pro.
- Strong writing and research skills.
- Thorough knowledge of global current events, with experience covering news in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
- The ability to make quick decisions under intense deadlines in a high‑pressure newsroom setting.
- A foundational knowledge of legal, ethical, copyright and usage issues for visuals.
- Well‑versed in the world of social and digital media, with a keen eye on what competitors are doing and what new tools are being used.
- Collaborative team player with a positive attitude.
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule during breaking news events.
