About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity to join a fast-paced creative visual team at The Telegraph. You will be joining the Graphics team where we continually look to transform information into compelling visual storytelling forms, underpinned by our graphic design and journalistic principles. We want someone who is going to help shape the future of The Telegraph’s graphic journalism using their creativity to engage our audience with informative content.
The ideal candidate will be able to adapt their visual ideas to different narrative types and apply them utilizing relevant digital and print formats.
- Create engaging information graphics for all of our digital platforms (App, Web, Social).
- Visually communicate complex subject matter in a clear and concise way.
- Explore new approaches for presenting stories on our digital publishing platforms.
- Work on breaking news, lead stories, investigations and longform features.
- Interpret, edit and visualise data into engaging pieces of graphic journalism.
- Report to the Director of Graphic Journalism, managing daily workflow.
- Collaborate with editors, reporters, data journalists, producers, designers, developers, animators, illustrators and video producers.
- Research topics surrounding stories to further enhance the quality of graphics.
- Review stories and come up with ideas to enhance the visual storytelling.
- Assist newsroom colleagues with best practices and appropriate visual solutions.
- Share technical developments with your colleagues to help progress the team’s capabilities.
- Working daytime shifts, Monday to Friday.
- Strong graphic design fundamentals (Typography, colour perception, composition, geometry, etc).
- Growing knowledge of editorial design and visual storytelling within publishing.
- Good understanding of graphic production on both print and digital platforms.
- Experience in cartography and geospatial analysis (QGIS, Map Shaper).
- Proficient in technical illustration (Adobe Illustrator); experience in 3D programs is a bonus.
- Competent in data visualisation tools (Raw, Data Wrapper).
- Fundamental front-end code capabilities (HTML/CSS/JS).
- Extensive understanding of user focused design and interface design (Figma).
- Data analysis and editing, to establish trends and points of interest (Excel, Sheets; R or Python is a bonus).
- Solid grasp of mathematics to enable precision plotting and problem solving.
- Good organisational skills and time management (Email, Trello).
- A passion for data visualisation and visual storytelling.
- An strong portfolio, showcasing graphic design and infographics.
- Active interest in current affairs and global events.
- Comprehensive understanding of media types and digital formats.
- Previous experience in publishing is a bonus.
- Naturally inquisitive, with excellent observation skills.
- A keen pursuit for technical development and enhancing personal skills.
