We’re looking for an editor, Animals Farmed
, to edit and commission a Guardian series reporting on animal and fish welfare and industrial farming around the world, elevating links and solutions for human health and food security.

This role will suit someone who is interested in global food systems, industry processes and ethical issues who can bring an objective and journalistic lens to some of the issues affecting our relationship with the animals and fish we farm.

Animals Farmed is an upcoming project that is part of the Guardian’s Foundations section – which includes internationally-themed projects covering a wide range of subject matter, such as Global development. It produces two newsletters and works in close partnership with other departments across the Guardian.

This position is a 12-month fixed-term contract or internal staff secondment and works a part-time, three days a week schedule.

• Reporting to the editor of foundations and philanthropic projects, drive coverage across the issue of animal farming and plan bold, agenda-setting stories for print and web as well as eye-catching visual presentations
• Support and give guidance to Guardian reporters assigned to the project and a network of freelancers around the world.
• Liaise on commissioning and story development with UK national and international desks and relevant editorial teams in the US, Australia and elsewhere
• React confidently to any breaking stories, collaborating with the relevant newsdesks
• Plan coverage for key diary events
• Contribute ideas to daily and weekly meetings
• Ensure the best presentation and promotion of stories on and off the Guardian’s platform
• Liaise with design, production, visuals and multimedia desks
• Commission and edit news content
• Deal with legal issues on a day to day basis
• Collaborate with indigenous journalism collectives around the world.

• Demonstrable experience of working as a journalist, ideally on a newspaper, news website or magazine with an international outlook
• Excellent news judgment, high motivation and proactive attitude
• A keen interest in, and preferably knowledge of, industrial farming, animal health and welfare and its impact on human well-being and diet
• Commitment to creating world-class journalism
• Experienced in effectively utilising social media and multimedia formats
• Media law knowledge
• Ideally, you’ll have a demonstrable ability to bring a diverse perspective to this role.

We operate in a hybrid environment working at least three days a week from our offices in King’s Cross in London.

The salary for this NUJ position starts from £60,748, with a package commensurate with the skills, level of experience and responsibilities of the position.

• You’ll have six weeks (this is prorated for part time roles) of annual leave per year (plus bank holidays) with the option to purchase an additional 5 days. Our pension scheme is generous; if you contribute 5% then we will contribute 8-12% (depending on your age).
