Job Description
The Sun is the biggest news brand in the UK with a talented, diverse team which publishes the best news, sport, lifestyle and showbiz in print and digital.
Your role: The Sun is looking for highly motivated, first class reporters to join The Trends Team - an exciting desk focused on high quality, referral-led content.
You will build the audience of The Sun by producing engaging, topical and highly shareable content for our digital audience with an innovative and dynamic team that is capitalising on emerging trends.
Day to day you will:
Produce high quality content: Write a number of engaging stories every day for the website, on a variety of different topics including lifestyle, consumer and news
Forensic monitoring of themes: Understand which themes are working for the website, from which referrers and why - as well as how to maximise traffic potential
Variety and originality: Ability to expand themes by adapting them - finding new ways to interest readers as well as come up with new topics to drive traffic
Pivot as necessary: Be nimble and swap focus from Social to Discover to the Homepage quickly. Ability to experiment with content to reach new audiences
Quality: Be able to write accurate, strong copy under pressure and tight deadlines
Editing: Check junior writers’ work to ensure we deliver exceptional copy under the pressure of rolling deadlines in a fast-paced news environment
Creativity and agility: Be on the pulse with story ideas coming from a wide variety of sources, and have the ability to pitch good ideas daily
Teamwork: Work with teams across the newsroom to ensure good communication
What we’re looking for from you:
Proven experience as a digital reporter in a national newsroom
Strong ability to write stories quickly and under pressure, but still to a high standard
Demonstrable understanding of traffic-driving, including the differences between referrers such as Discover, Facebook and the Homepage and how to target each one
Adept at working with others, such as senior editors and audience managers, on story ideas
Ability to balance feedback from multiple sources with your own ideas to create the best lists possible
Knowledge of writing for different sections and how that impacts style (Consumer, Travel, News, Lifestyle etc)
Be brimming with new ideas
Knowledge of lifestyle trends and how to adapt them into highly-clickable content
A tireless work ethic, a positive attitude, and a desire to learn and grow
The ability to work collaboratively as part of a large, integrated team
Knowledge of media law and the IPSO code
