We're looking for a Box Office Assistant to join our Visitor & Security Services team. This is a fantastic opportunity to become part of an organisation with a world-renowned collection and a mission to inspire curiosity, understanding and engagement with cultures across the globe. The role provides a vital first point of contact for our visitors, helping them access exhibitions, events, lectures and other Museum experiences.

This role offers far more than a traditional box office position. As part of the Museum team, you'll have the opportunity to develop a strong understanding of the organisation's work, collections and public programmes. You will join a small, supportive team of four Box Office Assistants, working closely together to deliver an excellent service and contribute to continuous improvements across the function.

If you're enthusiastic about customer service, enjoy helping people and would like to play an important role in welcoming visitors to one of the world's leading cultural institutions, we'd love to hear from you.

About you

We're looking for someone who enjoys delivering exceptional customer service and is confident communicating with a diverse range of people.

You'll bring:

  • Experience working in a busy customer-facing environment, ideally within a box office, contact centre or similar service setting.
  • Outstanding communication and telephone skills with experience providing high-quality customer service.
  • Confidence promoting, recommending or upselling products and services.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy and good IT skills, including experience using databases and Microsoft-based systems.
  • The ability to remain calm, organised and professional in a fast-paced environment, with a collaborative approach.

Key areas of responsibility

  • Sell and promote tickets for exhibitions, lectures, events and other Museum activities.
  • Process bookings, including school and group bookings, accurately and efficiently.
  • Provide information and guidance to visitors about exhibitions, facilities, events and the visitor offer and promote Museum Membership and other visitor services.
  • Respond to enquiries by telephone and escalate issues when appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate records and databases and handle all administrative tasks associated with bookings including processing payments.

The British Museum is undertaking its biggest transformation since its founding nearly 300 years ago. This physical and intellectual transformation includes large scale building and gallery transformation, new ways of connecting with audiences and different ways of working. As we look towards this exciting future, we remain guided by the words of our founder Hans Sloane - who dreamed of a museum connecting all arts and sciences, which would be accessible to everyone, everywhere.

At the British Museum, we believe our people are at the heart of everything we do and have designed a benefits package that goes beyond the ordinary. Our full list of benefits can be found here , but we’ve outlined some highlights below:

  • Free exhibition entry for you and guests, exclusive private views, ICOM and reciprocal museum access.
  • Civil Service Pension Scheme defined benefit with 28.97% employer contribution.
  • 25 days’ annual leave plus bank holidays and 2.5 privilege days (and +5 days after 10 years).
  • Social and wellbeing perks including Staff parties, social clubs, CSSC sports and leisure, and support from the Civil Service Retirement Fellowship.
  • Learning and development through courses, mentoring and Athena as well as support for professional qualifications.
  • Employee Assistance Programme available 24/7 for counselling, wellbeing support and more.
  • Interest‑free loans including season ticket, rental deposit and bicycle loans.
