Job Overview
We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic, qualified and GDC registered Band 6 Dental Technician to work within our removable appliance dental team and undertake the duties of a Band 6 Specialist Dental Technician.
The Dental InstituteThe Dental Institute comprises three components:
The Dental Hospital of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust;
The Dental Hospital of King’s NHS Foundation Trust; and King’s College London Dental Institute. It is accountable to each of its parent trusts and is expected to deliver clinical services that meet NHS standards of practice and specific Trust standards.

- Construction of a range of removable appliances for clinical staff, postgraduate students and undergraduate students.
- Familiarity with CAD/CAM technology and its current role within dental technology.
- Demonstration of specific skills, including high levels of dexterity and coordination.
- Scanning and design of removable appliances for periods of intense concentration using VDU equipment, with possible requirement for prolonged seated positions.
- Prioritisation of own workload, including planning for appliances, formulating adjustments, and ensuring appointment dates are met while maintaining up‑to‑date records using correct laboratory protocols.
- Production of all work in line with Medical Devices Regulations.
- Communication with staff and students regarding design and prescription of conventional removable appliances, including time spent in clinics and occasional patient interaction.
- Assistance with routine day‑to‑day laboratory operations and support for clinical and nursing staff with collection of completed work.
- Ensuring cleanliness and tidiness of own work areas, maintaining responsibility for specific laboratory equipment, and reporting defects to the Lead Technician.
- Implementation of safe working practices and compliance with COSHH and other regulations as per the Dental Institute’s code of practice.
- Mindful attention to personal actions affecting the safety of others.
- Familiarity with disinfection protocols of impressions to remove saliva or oral debris before appliance production, and ensuring that all work leaving the laboratory meets cross‑infection control guidelines required by the Trust.
- Experience working in a laboratory environment with heat‑generating equipment such as Bunsen burners, furnaces and hot water tanks, with frequent exposure to hazardous chemicals and materials.
- Occasional light physical effort, e.g., filling plaster bins.
- Reporting any complaints or concerns about technical services provision to the Lead Dental Technician.
- Undergoing performance assessment by the Laboratory Manager through a formal appraisal system that identifies competencies and a personal development plan, with reviews in line with hospital and laboratory quality standards.
- Assistance with any duties required to ensure the smooth and efficient running of the Dental Institute.
