About Aphex
We're the construction planning platform replacing outdated spreadsheets with multiplayer tools that delivery teams love. Major contractors like Acciona, CPB Contractors, John Holland, and McConnell Dowell use Aphex to deliver projects from £50 million to multi-billion pound mega projects.
We're market-leading in Australia and the UK, supporting teams building the roads, rail, tunnels, and hospitals that millions use every day. Our founding thesis: owning the planning layer is a gateway to solving high-friction adjacent processes in what we call the orchestration layer of major project delivery. Diary is our first major product expansion of that thesis.
The RoleWe're looking for a Product Designer to own mobile experience design across Aphex—with a primary focus on Diary, our production tracking and record capture product.
80% of mobile usage is Diary—capture, task updates, photo logging, voice contributions. The people using this aren't y're site managers in PPE, foremen on shared tablets, engineers shifting between zones with patchy connectivity. Designing for this context is fundamentally different from desktop.
Most construction software looks like it was built by people who've never been on a building site. Our bar is different. We build tools construction teams are genuinely proud to use—and right now, mobile is where the gap between our ambition and our execution is widest.
Where we are:
- Flutter mobile app live across iOS and Android
- Diary in market with 10 enterprise customers and unanimously strong feedback
- Web experience sets a high bar—mobile needs to match it
- Small, senior design team that needs to grow to meet the product surface
- You'd be the first designer with devoted mobile focus
- End-to-end design of mobile features from briefing through to shipped UI
- Define and evolve interaction patterns that feel native and considered
- Design for real constraints: gloved hands, outdoor visibility, shared devices, patchy connectivity
- Work closely with Flutter engineers to ensure designs translate faithfully
Bridge the quality gap between web and mobile
- Daily collaboration with PMs on feature scoping—they bring user context, you bring design thinking
- Partner with Flutter engineers on feasibility and implementation fidelity
- Review builds, catch issues before they ship
- Be the person who says "this isn't right yet" when it matters
- Evolve Aphex's design system, particularly mobile components
- Work with the Head of UX on standards and quality benchmarks
- Ensure consistency across web and mobile where it counts
Diary is our biggest revenue lever for 2026. Whether construction teams adopt it depends directly on the mobile capture experience—and that's what you'd own.
This isn't executing someone else's vision in Figma. You'll shape what gets built, visit construction sites, and push back when something doesn't meet the bar. You'd be joining a small, senior design team at the point where mobile goes from "we have an app" to "we have an experience worth paying for."
About YouEssential:
- 4+ years product design experience, with strong mobile portfolio (iOS, Android, or cross-platform)
- Proven ability to design for complex workflows, not just simple consumer apps
- Solid interaction design skills: flows, states, and edge cases—not just screens
- Comfortable working within platform constraints—a design that can't be built isn't a good design
- Can work across the full design process: exploration, detailed design, QA
- Remote-first mindset: write clearly, give and receive feedback asynchronously
Highly valued:
- Flutter experience and understanding of cross-platform mobile constraints
- Experience designing for field workers, industrial users, or non-desk environments
- Vertical SaaS or B2B experience
- Design systems experience
- Construction or infrastructure industry knowledge
Not looking for:
- Pixel-perfect artists who don't think about interaction or implementation
- Someone who wants to hand off mockups and move on
- People uncomfortable with ambiguity—we're building a new product category
Work & Culture:
- Remote-first role working across UK, Europe, and…
