Build your expertise in a borough where safety, sustainability and technical excellence matter

As an Assistant Building Control Surveyor, you'll develop your skills at the heart of a progressive Building Control service. Working on varied and often high-profile developments, you'll help ensure buildings across the borough are safe, compliant and built for the future.

Working Style

You'll be based in the Borough for 3 days a week, playing a key role in serving the local community. Whether you're working on the frontline or behind the scenes, you'll be part of a dedicated team making a real difference to residents’ lives.

What you'll be doing

You will carry out technical assessments of building work, making informed decisions to ensure compliance with health, safety and energy conservation standards. Under supervision, you'll manage your own portfolio of development sites, maintaining clear and accurate records for plan appraisals and site inspections.

You’ll work across a range of projects, including Class 2A and 2B developments, applying the Building Act 1984 and Building Regulations 2010 in a practical and proportionate way. Where necessary, you'll support enforcement activity to address non-compliance and uphold standards.

Collaboration will be central to your role. You'll liaise with architects, contractors, developers, residents and external agencies, providing clear and professional guidance. You'll respond to complaints and unauthorised works with transparency and integrity.

You'll also contribute to the ongoing development of the service, supporting our ISO 9001 quality standards and helping us maintain a customer-focused, efficient Building Control function in line with the evolving regulatory framework.

For further details, please review the Job Description and Person Specification.

What you'll bring

You will be a registered Class 1 or Class 2A/2B Building Inspector and working towards professional membership with a recognised body such as RICS, CABE or CIOB.

You'll bring experience preparing technical reports and a solid understanding of the Building Regulations 2010 and approved documents. Experience working within a structured quality management system is important, as accuracy and consistency underpin the role.

You'll be organised, proactive and able to manage your time effectively in a busy environment. Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential, as you'll need to produce clear reports and correspondence for both professionals and members of the public.

Above all, you'll demonstrate a commitment to fairness, integrity and equal opportunity, recognising how your work supports the safety and wellbeing of our communities.

Why join us

At RBKC, we're all in – investing in our people, our communities and our future.

You'll join a forward-thinking Building Control service working closely with the Building Safety Regulator on significant and high-profile developments. Our borough offers a uniquely varied portfolio, from major commercial schemes and museums to the Council’s own corporate property estate.

We provide a supportive environment where professional development is actively encouraged. As the building control regime continues to evolve, you'll have the opportunity to grow your expertise within a respected and collaborative team.

This is a role where you can build a strong technical foundation while contributing to projects that genuinely shape the borough.
