Overview
This post is for a Consultant Ophthalmic surgeon with subspecialty interest in Paediatric Ophthalmology, Strabismus and Cataract Surgery. The successful candidate will join an existing team of 4 consultants in the Paediatric and Strabismus service.
The post is well established and, in addition to clinical and surgical responsibilities, the correct applicant will support ongoing development of the service and be responsible for ROP screening at the trust.
Responsibilities- Provide senior clinician services to respective firms as per the indicative job plan or as agreed with the Trust.
- No on‑call commitments are applicable to this post.
- Work with consultant colleagues and nursing staff to ensure efficient use of the Trust’s resources and contribute actively to clinical governance in the department, including the development of quality enhancement projects.
- Provide senior clinician services to areas of specialist interest as per the job plan; for a consultant ophthalmologist, this includes providing ophthalmic services and working with colleagues to ensure efficient use of resources.
- Show flexibility and undertake appropriate clinical tasks within the allocated DCC sessions at the request of the clinical lead, as needs arise.
- Actively participate in the unit’s Teaching Programme, undertaking supervision, teaching and training of medical trainees and other multi‑professional staff, in line with guidance from the relevant Royal Colleges or specialty bodies.
- Actively participate in clinical guidelines development, audit and CPD.
- Provision of outpatient services in sub‑specialty and general ophthalmology clinics.
- Provide ophthalmology advice to medical and surgical inpatients to the best of colleagues’ abilities.
- Collaborate with colleagues, both medical and nursing, to improve and advance the service.
- Share responsibility for the management of the department.
- Support teaching and training of trainees, junior medical staff, nursing staff, primary care colleagues and medical students.
- Ensure active participation in continuing professional development (CPD).
The job plan will be formally agreed following appointment. A sample timetable is included below to demonstrate the allocation of Protected Activity Sessions (PAs). The individual job plan will be reviewed and agreed annually. The timetable has no on‑call rota.
The department is committed to providing a strong training culture. Junior doctors rotate as part of the North London Deanery training programme through a firm‑based timetable, August to August. There are regular consultant‑led lunch‑time teaching sessions on Mondays and Fridays.
Successful candidates will be supported in the continued provision of their sub‑specialty service and will have continuing responsibility for care under their scope of responsibility and will work closely with consultant colleagues for the effective functioning of the department.
