Position: Fleming Initiative Clinical Research Fellow in Human Infection Challenge
Location: Greater London

Are you an enthusiastic physician looking to bridge the gap between clinical practice and cutting-edge academic medicine?

Staphylococcus aureus is a leading cause of life-threatening infection worldwide, and with the rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), the need for new preventive strategies is urgent. As a Fleming Initiative Clinical Research Fellow in Dr Dinesh Aggarwal’s group, you will be integral in the clinical delivery of a pioneering controlled human infection study designed to understand immune response to this pathogen.

This post offers a unique opportunity to work at the forefront of translational research. You will help establish a novel human challenge model involving the administration of S. aureus in the presence of a surgical suture - a world-first study essential for advancing vaccine and therapeutic development.

We are looking for a dynamic and motivated doctor with a strong interest in infectious diseases, vaccines, and academic medicine. This post offers an ideal platform to secure an MD(Res) or expand your research portfolio, and positions you at the heart of the Fleming Initiative - a transformative partnership between Imperial College London and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. If you are ready to develop clinical and laboratory skills in a supportive, world-class environment, we want to hear from you.

You will be based in Dr Dinesh Aggarwal’s research group to deliver the Staphylococcus aureus controlled human infection model. As a key clinical lead for this study, you will:

  • Contribute to protocol development, regulatory compliance, and safety reporting, ensuring the study meets the highest standards of Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
  • Work closely with the multidisciplinary team to screen and recruit eligible participants
  • Provide direct medical care and supervision for healthy volunteers undergoing aureus skin challenge. You will manage participant safety, monitor infection progression, and oversee the clinical team during inpatient quarantine and follow-up.
  • Beyond the aureus study, you will contribute to the delivery of viral upper respiratory tract controlled human infection models run by Prof Chris Chiu, giving you exposure to a diverse portfolio of cutting-edge experimental medicine.
  • You will have the opportunity to participate in the analysis of immune responses, bacterial genomics, and microbiome determinants, helping to identify the factors that determine susceptibility to infection.

We are seeking an academically driven physician with a genuine interest in the science of infectious diseases. You must be able to demonstrate clinical excellence and the ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team. To succeed in this role, you will need:

  • Medical

    Qualifications:

A medical degree with full GMC registration and license to practice. You should have experience in managing general medical problems, medical emergencies, and infections (specifically aureus and surgical site infections).
  • Research Interest & Potential: A clear interest in academic medicine, vaccines, or microbiology. While previous experience in clinical trials or research methods is desirable, we are looking for candidates with the initiative and flexibility to learn.
  • Clinical Leadership:
The ability to exercise initiative, make sound clinical judgments independently, and provide appropriate care for study participants.
  • Communication

    Skills:

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex research to volunteers and collaborate effectively with external scientific and industry partners.
  • The chance to contribute to the Fleming Initiative, a transformative partnership between Imperial College London and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust dedicated to tackling AMR.
  • The possibility of enrolling for an MD(Res) or equivalent, with supervision from internationally recognised experts.
  • The opportunity to develop high-level research skills in microbiology (genomics/microbiome) and immunology, alongside training in clinical trial management and regulatory governance.
  • You will be embedded in Dr Dinesh Aggarwal’s group and be fully supported by Prof Chris Chiu’s team, gaining exposure to world-leading research where positive and inclusive working environments are prioritised.
  • A supportive environment:
Be part of a diverse, inclusive, and collaborative work culture with various and resources designed to support your personal and professional .
