The Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is appointing a Senior Clinical Fellow in Colorectal and General Surgery. The post holder will be responsible for ward rounds, will undertake General Surgery and Colorectal outpatient clinics, and assist on Colorectal and General Surgery theatre lists. There is opportunity for the post holder to get involved in teaching and training, audit and quality improvement work.
The post holder will have the opportunity to gain experience in Open, Laparoscopic and Robotic colorectal surgery as well as endoscopy.
The post is offered on a full-time basis, and includes a 1 in 12 on call commitment, including night shifts, with commensurate banding.
This is a 6 month post to cover the gap for a deanery trainee.
Main duties of the job- Ensure appropriate and safe management of general and colorectal surgery patients.
- Provide shared office space, including computer and appropriate secretarial support.
- Participate in postgraduate and undergraduate teaching and training programme within the hospital; research activity encouraged.
- Contribute to the development of the service within the directorate; take part in management and routine administrative duties associated with patient care.
- Ensure entitlement to study leave is taken; continuing professional development is an integral part of the post.
- Work flexible hours in line with service needs, e.g., arriving earlier and staying later on days where supporting in theatres.

The post will be based in the Department of General Surgery within the subspecialty of Colorectal Surgery. The post involves supporting the supervising consultants in the full spectrum of clinical activity including main theatres, day surgery theatres, out-patients and ward work. The successful candidate may be expected to support surgeons across the service. This will provide an excellent opportunity to learn from experienced surgeons, particularly as they look to continue to provide high quality clinical care in a post‑COVID healthcare environment.
It is envisioned that the successful candidate will play an active role in improving the emergency surgical pathway for patients alongside consultants, managers, and the wider hospital team. A particular focus will be the effective running of the CEPOD list. Experience in quality improvement would be desirable but training can be provided within the Trust.
The appointee will participate in the registrar on‑call rota, which will include night shifts. The pattern for these on‑call shifts is currently a 1 in 12 rotation with no more than 4 consecutive days/nights. Appropriate zero days are scheduled to ensure rota compliance. Notice of 6 weeks will be given for any changes to the rota pattern.
