Job Summary
The successful candidates will join a rapidly expanding Respiratory Department. We are seeking two outstanding clinicians to complement the current respiratory service, with opportunities to contribute to subspecialty development aligned to service need.
ResponsibilitiesThe Respiratory Department sees approximately 3,000 new patients a year and aims to offer an appointment within four weeks of referral. The lung function laboratory is led by Rama Gorrela, Chief Physiologist, who is supported by two full‑time technicians. In addition to standard lung function, there is a full allergy service and a growing sleep service. The department has over 3,000 patients on CPAP and receives referrals from other catchment areas.
With a high incidence of tuberculosis (27 per 100,000) below the London average, and a sarcoidosis prevalence of ~25 per 100,000, the service manages a diverse patient group. Bronchoscopies are performed in a dedicated endoscopy facility using endoscopic and endobronchial ultrasound for mediastinal lymph‑node sampling, with referrals from across NE London.
The Lung Cancer service is supported by a Lung CNS, an Acute Oncology Nurse and a team of Palliative Care Nurses. Inpatient respiratory care is delivered via Lamb Ward, a 28‑bed unit dedicated to respiratory and general medicine patients. The post holder will participate in ward management of these patients on Lamb Ward in 8‑week blocks, maintain patient continuity, and work with colleagues across wards.
A weekly departmental meeting covers case presentations, a journal club, and mortality review. The department also manages tuberculosis cases, offers an accredited allergy service, and delivers active TB community services. An integrated respiratory service (ACERS) works across primary and secondary care, caring for COPD, asthma, bronchiectasis, interstitial lung disease, cardiac failure, and other respiratory conditions. Specialist nurses cover Allergy, Asthma, and Lung Cancer.
Post‑Covid‑19 follow‑up, interstitial lung disease, TB and cough clinics continue, and the post holder is expected to contribute to these services, including pleural procedures.
