Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust
The Hepatology service at Guy's and St Thomas' (GSTT) is an IQILs level 2 accredited unit that provides tertiary care for patients with liver disease and hepatobiliary conditions. The unit has a large outpatient service with sub-specialty clinics, including viral hepatitis, autoimmune liver disease and HPB medicine. There is a hepatology inpatient service on Alan Apley ward, St Thomas' Hospital, with a dedicated resident doctor team and a Gastro Day Unit offering a day case paracentesis service.
There is a large endoscopy unit at St Thomas' and Guy's Hospitals and as part of the Hepatology service there are two dedicated endoscopy lists for management of portal hypertension and four ERCP/EUS lists per week. We are a tertiary referral service for complex hepatobiliary cases. The unit is also active in clinical and commercial research and quality improvement.
This is post focused on service development, primarily based in the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at GSTT and funded by SELCA. The main aim of this post is to work on a regional project to improve the quality of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) surveillance across south east London. Liver cancer is the fastest-rising cause of cancer related deaths in the UK, the most common form of which is HCC.
Despite international recommendations to offer HCC surveillance to individuals considered at high risk, only 20% of HCCs are currently diagnosed at an early stage and five year survival for HCC remains poor at 13%. In 2023 NHS England set out minimum standards for services delivering HCC surveillance. This project is part of the goal to improve HCC surveillance services across south east London.
The post holder will work closely with all three NHS Trusts in the region. They will have the opportunity to undertake clinical sessions in the Hepatology department at GSTT and attend oncology/HCC clinics/MDMs at King's College Hospital. Ideally the post holder will be available to start as soon as possible.
Our values describe who we are as an organisation and help shape our Guy's and St Thomas' culture. They guide us in everything that we do and are central to how we deliver our strategy.
We updated our values in September 2024 to express what we expect of ourselves and each other, both now and in the future. Almost 1,800 colleagues from across the Trust, helped develop these to summarise what matters to us as an organisation.
Ambitious: we innovate and strive for excellence
Inclusive: we respect each other and work collaboratively
Job responsibilitiesThe post holder will work with the consultant leads on this project at all three sites, with project managers from SELCA and with other clinical staff involved in delivering HCC surveillance at each site. The post holder will be expected to help with the development of databases of patients at risk of HCC at each site; they will be involved with novel AI solutions to improving HCC surveillance as well as projects in improving patient engagement.
The clinical duties of this post will be predominantly outpatient service in hepatology, with the possibility of oncology clinics also. There is no provision for endoscopy training in this post, but there may be opportunity for some experience in this area on an ad hoc basis if desired. There may be the requirement to cover aspects of the inpatient service if required.
