Senior Clinical Fellow – Paediatric Emergency Medicine

The post is based in the children’s emergency department, where the post‑holder is responsible for the care of all patients under the supervision of a consultant. The senior clinical fellow will direct the management of ill and injured children, participate in the resuscitation and stabilization of severely ill children, and assist in the management of severely injured children.
Main dutiesApplications are invited for a Senior Clinical Fellow post in Paediatric Emergency Medicine at St Thomas’ Hospital. This role is ideal for a doctor with a background in paediatrics or emergency medicine who has worked on a registrar rota, or for a doctor at the end of their training wishing to consolidate their skills in paediatric emergency medicine. The Trust has one of the largest simulation centres in the UK with regular in‑situ simulations and multiple simulation‑centre paediatric and emergency medicine courses.
Responsibilities:
- Provide clinical care to all children in the emergency department under consultant supervision.
- Lead the management, resuscitation, and stabilization of severely ill and injured patients.
- Participate in out‑of‑hours cover for the paediatric emergency department (full shift band 1A).
- Contribute to teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students.
- Engage in clinical governance activities including clinical audit, guideline development, and risk management.
- Participate in audit and research activities; present or publish scientific work.
Formal training through postgraduate programmes in both the paediatric and emergency departments, including weekly grand rounds, X‑ray meetings, and consultant‑led teaching. Paediatric resuscitation training scenarios and simulation sessions are run regularly.

Education & AppraisalAll posts are subject to working‑time monitoring in line with GMC guidelines. Appraisal and appraisal of clinical performance are required. The postholder may undertake study leave and training funding as per the lead consultant’s discretion.
Person Specification – Qualifications- GMC registration; MBBS (or equivalent).
- APLS or similar paediatric emergency resuscitation course provider.
- Complete Foundation competencies or equivalent.
- MRCPCH Part 1, MRCP, or equivalent.
- APLS Instructor or equivalent resuscitation provider training.
- Level 3 child protection training.
- Previous paediatric or neonatal experience.
- Experience as a middle grade in paediatrics or emergency medicine.
- Minimum 2 years as SHO in paediatrics and related specialties.
- Experience in paediatric intensive care, surgery, anaesthesia, trauma & orthopaedics, plastic surgery, etc.
- Understanding of clinical audit and risk management.
- Clinical procedures relevant to paediatric emergency medicine.
- Child protection experience and skills.
- Experience in quality improvement or service development.
- Enthusiasm for teaching and evidence of teaching experience.
- Teaching qualification.
- Research experience, presentations, publications, prizes and honours.
- Information technology skills.
- Exposure to diverse teaching methods.
