Consultant Surgeon – Upper GI & General Surgery

The successful candidate will be an experienced and collaborative Upper GI and General Surgeon committed to high-quality patient care and aligned with UCLH values of safety, kindness, teamwork and continuous improvement. They will contribute to specialist UGI cancer care, benign UGI pathways and general surgery activity, supporting the Trust’s objectives to improve waiting times and deliver an excellent patient experience.

Knowledge, Training & QualificationsApplicants must hold full GMC registration and be on (or within six months of entry to) the GMC Specialist Register in General Surgery. Strong understanding of NHS clinical governance, quality standards and safe service delivery is essential. JAG accreditation is required. Additional academic qualifications (MD/PhD) and evidence of research activity are desirable but not essential.
ExperienceCandidates must have completed comprehensive training in UGI and General Surgery, demonstrating competence in the management of benign and cancer cases as well as general surgical emergencies. Experience in clinical audit, governance and undergraduate/postgraduate teaching is essential. Prior involvement in a UGI MDT or tertiary cancer setting, and experience showing leadership in teaching or service improvement, are advantageous.
Clinical & Technical SkillsThe postholder must be independently proficient in open and laparoscopic UGI procedures and core general surgical operations, with the ability to manage emergency presentations confidently. Strong operative judgement, decision-making skills and capability to work within a 1:5/6 tertiary on-call rota are required. Experience in complex benign UGI surgery and advanced laparoscopic techniques is desirable but not mandatory.
