Position: Trust Doctor/GPVTS (eqv to ST1) in Emergency Medicine
Location: Greater London

Job Summary

Trust Doctor / GPVTS (equivalent to ST1) in Emergency Medicine at Newham Hospital. Join a busy, high‑acuity inner‑city Emergency Department that serves one of the most diverse and socio‑economically deprived populations in the UK. Newham ED attends over 90,000 patients annually, managing undifferentiated, high‑risk and complex acute presentations, including major trauma, medical and surgical emergencies, infectious diseases, mental health crises and social vulnerabilities.

The department is a Trauma Unit with strong links to the Royal London Hospital Major Trauma Centre and includes separate Paediatric ED and Urgent Care Centre.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work on a SHO‑level rota across all areas of the department, including Adult and Paediatric Emergency Medicine, Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) and Clinical Decision Units.
  • Clinically assess and manage undifferentiated adult and paediatric patients under appropriate supervision.
  • Perform core ED procedures such as venepuncture, peripheral cannulation, arterial blood gas sampling and wound suturing.
  • Escalate unstable or high‑risk patients for timely senior review.
  • Contribute to teaching and professional development activities for undergraduate and resident doctors.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
  • Primary medical qualification accepted by the GMC (MBBS or equivalent).
  • Full GMC registration with licence to practise at time of application (or confirmed eligibility before the start date).
  • Completion of FY2 or equivalent by post start date.
  • ALS provider status or confirmed ability to obtain before the start date.
  • Minimum 4 months FTE experience in Emergency Medicine or an acute care specialty (Acute Medicine, ICU, Anaesthetics, General Surgery).
  • Independent management of undifferentiated adult ED patients in a supervised role and assessment of paediatric patients in an ED or paediatric acute care setting.
  • Competence in core ED procedures: venepuncture, peripheral cannulation, arterial blood gas sampling and wound suturing.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
  • MRCEM (any part) passed or booked.
  • Additional acute care qualifications such as ATLS, APLS, BASIC.
  • Ultrasound Level 1 qualification.
  • Additional relevant degree (intercalated, master’s or doctorate).
  • At least 4 months FTE experience in Emergency Medicine, including exposure to multiple ED areas (majors, minors, paeds, resus, SDEC) and in a high‑volume or urban setting.
  • Experience in advanced ED procedures: point‑of‑care ultrasound, NIV initiation, chest drains and closed fracture reduction.
  • Evidence of portfolio development aligned to EM training and completion of EM‑relevant courses aligned to the RCEM curriculum.
Essential Skills
  • Ability to manage acutely unwell patients such as sepsis, asthma and trauma during supervised shifts.
  • Proficient use of timely senior review and escalation processes for unstable or high‑risk patients.
Desirable Skills
  • Regular attendance and delivery of undergraduate or resident doctor teaching.
  • Structured teaching or formal teaching role experience.
