Consultant in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and ACHD

(10 PAs)

Applicants are invited to apply for a substantive Consultant post in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and ACHD at Barts Health NHS Trust, based at St Bartholomew's Hospital.

In October 2014 NHS England approved a case for change for the way specialist cardiovascular services are provided across north and east London, enabling the creation of the Barts Heart Centre. The centre combines services and staff from the London Chest Hospital, UCLH's The Heart Hospital, and St Bartholomew's. It has 10 theatres, 10 catheter labs (including 2 hybrid rooms), 255 general cardiac beds and 98 higher acuity care beds including 58 Level 3 critical care beds.

The Barts Heart Centre is one of the busiest surgical programmes in Europe and performs more PCIs and cardiac MRI and CT scans than any other centre in the world. It runs a well‑established ECLS programme for respiratory and cardiac support.

Main duties

The successful candidate will have general anaesthesia skills and training suitable for a Consultant. As a Barts Health employee the post may involve future opportunities or requirements to work at other hospitals in the group.

Applicants must have full GMC registration, a licence to practise and be eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. UK trained candidates should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry ‑UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.

Job responsibilities

Consultants will have continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge. They will undertake administrative duties associated with providing patient care. The Trust will provide office space, computers and secretarial support. Consultants are expected to deliver safe and evidence‑based anaesthesia and analgesia in line with agreed departmental Trust and national policies and guidelines.

Consultants are expected to take responsibility for teaching and training junior doctors and undergraduates. All consultants assume responsibility—both individually and corporately—for the management of trainee medical staff. They are required to approve and monitor trainee rotas and locum arrangements where appropriate.
