Job Description
Job Title: Teacher of Religious Education (RE)
Location: Harris Academy Rainham
Reporting to: Head of Religious Education / Head of Humanities
Contract Type: Full-time, Permanent
To deliver high-quality Religious Education lessons across Key Stages 3, 4 and 5, fostering critical thinking, respectful dialogue and a deep understanding of diverse religious and philosophical perspectives. The post holder will contribute to raising standards of achievement and supporting students’ academic and personal development.
Key Responsibilities Teaching & Learning- Plan and deliver engaging, well-structured RE lessons in line with the academy’s curriculum.
- Teach across Key Stage 3, GCSE (Key Stage
4), and A-Level (Key Stage
5) where required. - Use a variety of teaching strategies to engage and challenge students of all abilities.
- Promote critical thinking, analytical skills, and structured written argument.
- Maintain high expectations for behaviour and academic achievement.
- Assess, record and report on student progress in line with academy policy.
- Provide timely, constructive feedback to support improvement.
- Use assessment data to inform planning and targeted intervention.
- Support students in preparing for internal and external examinations.
- Contribute to the development and refinement of the RE curriculum.
- Share resources and best practice within the department.
- Attend departmental meetings and contribute to collaborative planning.
- Act as a form tutor if required.
- Support students’ personal development and wellbeing.
- Promote an inclusive classroom culture that respects diversity and difference.
- Participate in parents’ evenings, open events and whole-school activities.
- Support extracurricular activities related to RE, philosophy or debate where appropriate.
- Uphold academy policies and contribute to the wider school community.
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent.
- Degree in Religious Education, Theology, Philosophy or a related subject.
- Experience teaching RE/RS at secondary level.
- Experience teaching GCSE; A-Level teaching experience desirable.
- Strong subject knowledge across world religions and philosophy.
- Ability to teach complex ethical and philosophical concepts clearly.
- Strong classroom management skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to analyse student data and use it to drive progress.
- Passionate about Religious Education in a modern, diverse society.
- Committed to raising achievement and maintaining high standards.
- Reflective, organised and proactive.
- Collaborative team player.
The post holder will be responsible for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and must adhere to the academy’s safeguarding policies and procedures.
