Outdoor Educator – Animal Care & Science Lead - Permanent

Location:

Welling, Kent Full-Time | Term Time Only (40 Weeks Per Year)

Hours:

Monday to Friday, 8:45am – 5:15pm

Salary £30,000 per annum

GSL Education are proud to be working in partnership with a specialist independent setting in Welling to recruit an enthusiastic and compassionate Outdoor Educator – Animal Care & Science Lead.

This is a unique opportunity to join a therapeutic outdoor education environment that supports young people aged 14–19 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, neurodiversity, and associated learning difficulties. The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering engaging vocational learning experiences that promote confidence, wellbeing, and personal development through nature-based education.

The role will involve planning and delivering Animal Care & Science lessons, supporting vocational qualifications including BTEC and AQA courses, and leading practical outdoor learning activities. You will also support pupils through land-based projects, enrichment activities, and therapeutic educational experiences involving animals and the natural environment.

We are looking for someone who is passionate about outdoor learning and can build positive, supportive relationships with young people who may struggle in traditional educational settings.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan and deliver vocational lessons including Animal Care & Science
  • Complete assessment and qualification paperwork for BTEC/AQA courses
  • Lead enrichment or activity club sessions each week
  • Support educational visits, risk assessments, and off‑site activities
  • Assist with outdoor projects and development of learning spaces
  • Work collaboratively with the wider education and therapeutic team
Requirements
  • Level 5 teaching qualification or above
  • Minimum Level 2 qualification in Animal Care
  • Confidence teaching Animal Care/Animal Science up to Level 2
  • Experience working with children or young people, ideally within SEND or SEMH settings
  • A willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Ability to act as a positive role model for young people
Desirable
  • Relevant degree in Outdoor Education, Environmental Studies, or similar
  • First Aid qualification
  • Previous experience delivering outdoor education programmes
