Lecturer in Bioinformatics

We have an exciting opportunity for bioinformaticians at Birkbeck, University of London. The School of Natural Sciences is looking to appoint an exceptional lecturer in bioinformatics. Key areas of interest include machine learning/deep learning approaches, systems biology, proteomics or spatial transcriptomics.

You will be part of a vibrant team of researchers in the natural sciences at Birkbeck, with links to UCL through the ISMB, seeking to explore fundamental characteristics of living systems. You will benefit from an outstanding research environment, including access to our high-performance computing resources.

As a core member of our academic staff, you will contribute to the School through teaching, research, and administration. You will lead an internationally recognised research programme focused on an area of bioinformatics and will apply for external funds to support these activities. You will make a core contribution to our MSc Bioinformatics programme and participate in other BSc and MSc programmes related to your area, as well as supervising undergraduate, MSc and PhD research students.

You will be an active researcher in an area directly relevant to bioinformatics and have experience in the design, delivery and convening of courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level relevant to your background.

Shortlisted candidates will be asked to give a research seminar presentation (15 minutes) and attend an interview.

PhD in an area of bioinformatics or a closely related subject. Sound working knowledge of R and/or Python. Proven record of publishing high-quality research and experience in teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level. Understanding of Birkbeck’s principles of widening participation and experience working with mature age, part‑time and non‑traditional learners from a diversity of backgrounds.

Permanent, full-time contract – 35 hours a week with flexible hours. Salary ranging from £44,247 rising to £60,858 per annum. Grade LLEC, quoted on the College's London Pay Scale, which includes a consolidated weighting/allowance for staff whose normal contractual place of work is in the London area.
