Birkbeck, University of London, has an excellent opportunity for an Associate Tutor to join the teaching team and support the School of Psychological Sciences this Autumn 2026.
ResponsibilitiesYour role will support teaching and enable students to complete their studies successfully, including administrative duties as required. Your main responsibility will be preparation and running of a studying‑skills seminar, teaching, and marking assessments on the Academic Skills for Psychology first‑year, level 4 module. This also includes marking assessments and reassessments outside contracted teaching hours, e.g. marking for assessments in January 2027 and the summer reassessment period.
Detailsof the role
- Academic Skills for Psychology (Level
4) - 3 hours per week, 11 weeks (not including reading week)
- Monday (2‑5 pm) and/or evenings (6‑9 pm) – please indicate preference.
Most incumbents will be employed as part of their general academic development and will undertake this work independently but in parallel with postgraduate studies.
Qualifications- A first degree in Psychology or an equivalent relevant qualification.
- Advanced experience in using a range of statistical techniques and report writing suitable for quantitative psychological science research.
- Awareness of the needs of part‑time adult learners and ability to engage the interest and enthusiasm of students and inspire them to learn.
- Confident presentation skills and ability to clearly and effectively pass on specialist subject area knowledge.
- A good working knowledge of SPSS.
- A good level of IT and Communication Technology skills particularly in application to standard packages (e.g. Word, Excel, e‑mail, internet usage).
Fixed‑term, part‑time contract from October to December 2026. Teaching Monday (2‑5 pm) and/or evenings (6‑9 pm).
RemunerationPayment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College (starting rate £61.39 per hour inclusive of pro‑rata London Allowance and holiday pay) for contact hours worked. This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 6 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ at × 2.5, which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.
