Position Summary
The 5th Grade Teacher is responsible for creating a positive, engaging, and academically rigorous learning environment that supports the intellectual, social, emotional, and physical development of students. The teacher will plan and deliver instruction aligned with the Michigan Academic Standards, assess student progress, collaborate with colleagues and families, and contribute to a safe and inclusive school culture.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Instruction and Curriculum
- Plan and deliver high-quality instruction in core subject areas, including English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.
- Develop lesson plans aligned with Michigan Academic Standards and district curriculum.
- Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning needs of all students.
- Incorporate technology and innovative instructional strategies to enhance student learning.
- Utilize a variety of instructional methods to engage students and promote critical thinking.
Student Assessment
- Monitor and assess student progress using formative and summative assessments.
- Analyze assessment data to inform instructional decisions and improve student outcomes.
- Maintain accurate records of student achievement and attendance.
- Prepare report cards and communicate student progress to parents and guardians.
Classroom Management
- Establish and maintain a positive, respectful, and safe classroom environment.
- Implement effective classroom management strategies that promote student responsibility and engagement.
- Support students' social-emotional growth and encourage positive peer relationships.
- Follow district policies and procedures regarding student behavior and discipline.
Collaboration and Communication
- Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress, behavior, and classroom activities.
- Participate in parent‑teacher conferences, school events, and family engagement activities.
- Collaborate with grade‑level teams, special education staff, interventionists, counselors, and administrators.
- Participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and other collaborative planning opportunities.
Professional Responsibilities
- Maintain compliance with Michigan Department of Education requirements and district policies.
- Participate in ongoing professional development and training.
- Maintain confidentiality of student and staff information.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the principal or district administration.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field.
- Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with appropriate elementary education endorsement.
- Ability to meet all state and district requirements for employment.
- Knowledge of Michigan Academic Standards and best instructional practices.
- Strong classroom management, communication, and organizational skills.
Preferred
- Previous elementary teaching experience.
- Experience working with upper elementary students.
- Training in differentiated instruction, intervention strategies, and educational technology.
- Experience supporting diverse learners, including students with disabilities and English learners.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to create engaging and student‑centered learning experiences.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with students, families, staff, and community members.
- Proficiency in educational technology and data‑driven instruction.
- Commitment to fostering equity, inclusion, and academic excellence.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and move throughout the school day.
- Ability to supervise students in classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, playgrounds, and during school activities.
- Ability to lift and carry instructional materials and classroom supplies as needed.
Work Schedule
- Full‑time position following the district's approved school calendar and teacher contract.
