High School Science Teacher

Position SummaryThe High School Science Teacher is responsible for providing engaging, standards-based instruction in one or more science disciplines, including Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Science, Environmental Science, or Integrated Science. The teacher fosters scientific inquiry, critical thinking, and problem‑solving skills while preparing students for college, careers, and responsible citizenship. Instruction shall align with Michigan Academic Standards and district curriculum requirements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Instruction and Curriculum- Plan and deliver effective science instruction aligned with Michigan Academic Standards and district curriculum.
- Develop and implement lesson plans that promote scientific inquiry, experimentation, and critical thinking.
- Teach assigned science courses, which may include Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Science, Environmental Science, or other science‑related subjects.
- Integrate laboratory experiences, demonstrations, technology, and hands‑on learning opportunities into instruction.
- Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including students with disabilities, English learners, and advanced students.
- Utilize instructional technology and digital resources to enhance student engagement and learning.
- Maintain a safe and organized science classroom and laboratory environment.
- Follow all district, state, and federal safety regulations regarding laboratory procedures and chemical handling.
- Instruct students on proper laboratory safety practices and ensure compliance during all experiments and activities.
- Maintain laboratory equipment, supplies, and inventory records.
- Develop and administer assessments to measure student learning and mastery of science concepts.
- Analyze student performance data to inform instruction and improve student achievement.
- Maintain accurate records of grades, attendance, and student progress.
- Provide timely feedback to students and communicate progress to parents and guardians.
- Establish and maintain a positive, inclusive, and respectful learning environment.
- Implement effective classroom management strategies that support student success and engagement.
- Promote student responsibility, collaboration, and scientific curiosity.
- Address behavioral concerns in accordance with district policies and procedures.
- Communicate regularly with students, parents, and guardians regarding academic progress and classroom expectations.
- Collaborate with colleagues, counselors, administrators, and support staff to support student achievement.
- Participate in department meetings, Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), and school improvement initiatives.
- Attend parent‑teacher conferences, school events, and other required meetings.
- Maintain compliance with Michigan Department of Education requirements and district policies.
- Participate in ongoing professional development related to science instruction and educational best practices.
- Stay current on developments in science education, curriculum, and instructional technology.
- Maintain confidentiality of student and staff information.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or district administration.
- Bachelor's degree in Science Education or a related scientific field.
- Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with appropriate secondary science endorsement(s).
- Ability to meet all state and district employment requirements.
- Knowledge of Michigan Academic Standards and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) practices.
- Strong communication, organizational, and classroom management skills.
- Master's degree in Education, Science, or a related field.
- Previous experience teaching science at the secondary level.
- Experience conducting and supervising laboratory activities.
- Training in STEM education, project‑based learning, or inquiry‑based instruction.
