Background

The City of London Corporation is a major provider of education and works in close partnership with its affiliated schools, enabling staff to share best practice and expertise, and provide new opportunities for pupils. The City also has responsibility for education and skills from nursery provision through to later-life learning, and engages with providers including universities and colleges as well as promoting workplace apprenticeships and major careers events to encourage and promote working in the City of London.

The City Corporation delegates this authority to the Education Board, which monitors, reviews and implements the City Corporation’s Education Strategy covering cultural and creative learning and adult education and skills.

The City Corporation is now recruiting for an External Member to join its Education Board.

Successful Candidate Profile

In general terms, the successful candidate will share the City’s vision to prepare people to flourish in a rapidly changing world through exceptional education, cultural and creative learning, and skills that link to the world of work.

The successful candidate will be aligned to our expectations of excellence and will be able to demonstrate an active and long‑term interest in at least one of the areas described in our strategy. They will possess experience of working in collaborative partnerships and have worked at Trustee, school governorship or equivalent level within the education or charity sector. They will also be skilled in initiating change and policy development within their chosen professional area of expertise.

The Board is particularly interested in hearing from candidates who have experience working in the charity sector and who can demonstrate a commitment to diversity and social mobility.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor and review the City Corporation’s Strategies relating to education, cultural and creative learning, and skills, and oversee their implementation in consultation with relevant committees.
  • Oversee generally the City Corporation’s education activities.
  • Share oversight of the City Corporation’s sponsorship of its academies and, where relevant, members, directors and trustees.
  • Make recommendations to the Corporation’s Court of Common Council candidates for appointment where nomination rights are granted.
  • Monitor frameworks for effective accountability, challenge and support in the City of London Corporation’s family of schools.
  • Be responsible for the distribution of funds specifically allocated to education purposes, in accordance with the City Corporation’s strategic policies.
  • Assist with the promotion of adult education and skills in line with the City Corporation’s Adult Education and Skills Strategy.
  • Participate in any committee, panel, or special interest area to which they are appointed on behalf of the Education Board.
  • Develop and maintain a working knowledge of the City Corporation’s services, management arrangements, powers, duties and resource constraints.
  • Establish constructive partnerships with the City’s affiliated schools and co‑sponsors; post‑school learning providers, and cultural organisations.
  • Adhere to the City Corporation’s code of conduct and Seven Principles of Public Life.
Time Commitment
  • Attending three to four Education Board meetings per year.
  • Attending Education Board Sub‑Committee meetings as appropriate.
