The Person al Academic Tutors (2 roles) each attract 1 Programmed Activity (PA) per week
for three years
, subject to annual review. This rewarding role is an excellent opportunity to guide and support UCL medical students in a holistic way and help them feel a part of the Whittington as they transition to clinical years.

The post holder will work closely with central UCL, the Deputy Divisional Tutor and the UCLMS Professional Services Team with regular meetings to discuss any challenges or students in difficulty.

Our Personal Academic Tutors (PAT) are an extremely important point of contact for our medical students. All MBBS students is allocated a named personal tutor who will be the 'go-to' person for any questions, queries, or guidance that students need during the course.

Main duties of the job
  • Personal Tutors will be expected to take on 50 students for 1PA of time, or 25 students for 0.5PA of job planned time.
  • General pastoral and academic support of their students, including:
  • One group meeting at the beginning of Year 4 for introduction and expectation setting.
  • At least one 1:1 meeting with the student per term either in person or on Teams and we encourage Personal Academic Tutors to have one half day "clinic" per week to see students for 20-minute appointments (in negotiation with the student) and to keep in email contact.
  • To briefly record the outcome of the meeting on the student's Academic Student Record (ASR).
  • Monitoring of students' progress throughout the year.
  • To review the students' exam results on the ASR and meet with any student who is unsuccessful in the summative assessments, to provide support for their resit attempt.
  • To complete references for students, as requested, including the Foundation Programme reference in Year 6.
  • To liaise with UCLMS Office of the Divisional Tutor, to discuss any students of concern and identify any students who are not engaging with their tutor.
Person Specification Education / Qualifications
  • Primary Medical Degree (MBBS, MBChB or equivalent)
  • CCT
  • Substantive contract with Whittington Health NHS Trust and a UCL honorary title
  • Doctor in good standing with the GMC
  • Education qualification (or equivalent - for example Fellow of the Higher Education Academy or the Academy of Medical Educators)

  • Understanding of the NHS and Trust agenda for the development of UGME
  • Understanding of the Trust agenda on quality and safety and the contribution made by medical education
  • Educational research and publication in peer‑reviewed journals
  • Demonstrate ability to meet Trust Values
  • Demonstratable understanding of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and Knowledge of the NHS obligations under the Equality Act 2010 and the Public Sector Equality Duties
