The Department of War Studies is one of the only academic departments in the world focused on understanding the complex realm of conflict, security, and international politics through inter‑disciplinary teaching, research and engagement. We have a large and diverse faculty, with varied theoretical and methodological expertise in areas including, but not limited to, conflict resolution, contemporary and historical warfare, gender, international relations, migration and borders, security studies, strategic studies, technology and violence.

The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering high‑quality, innovative teaching on compulsory and optional modules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels on our War Studies programmes. These may include The History of Modern War (UG), Theory and Practice of War (PG) and History of War (PG) as well as Global Experience of War (UG).

The Department of War Studies seeks to appoint a Lecturer in the Global History of War and Conflict to contribute to the Department’s teaching and research capacity. We welcome applications from candidates whose research and teaching will contribute to and expand our expertise in the history of war and its relevance to the contemporary world. Given the expertise of current members of the Department, we are seeking applications from candidates with a research focus in the history of war and conflict in the 16th‑19th centuries that extends beyond Europe and North America.

In addition, we are not seeking applicants whose research focuses on the history of sea power, as this is an area of expertise already covered in the Department.

This post is a full time 1‑year, fixed‑term academic contract on the Academic Education Pathway (AEP), from September 2026 through August 2027. The AEP is designed to ensure the recognition, reward and opportunities for advancement for exceptional educators. Successful candidates will be expected to obtain membership of the Higher Education Academy. Around 60% of the successful candidate’s time will be dedicated to teaching, supervision, student support, educational leadership and innovation.

A further 20% will be dedicated to scholarship. The remaining 20% of the time will be dedicated to administration. The exact content of the workload will be decided in discussion with the Head of Department.

• Plan, organise and deliver innovative and effective teaching, including BA/MA dissertation supervision and personal tutoring in accordance with this post description and established Departmental practice.
• Develop and use a variety of methods to assess student learning and provide feedback that is timely, relevant, inclusive and appropriate.
• Leadership in teaching through module convening at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
• Contribute to a collegial and collaborative department culture.
• Participate in relevant professional associations and networks.
• Engage in reflective practice and professional development
• Disseminate scholarship through peer‑reviewed publications and/or conferences.
• Perform academic administrative duties and any other reasonable duties as requested by the Head of Department.

The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.

Appointments can only be made at Lecturer level, Grade 6. It will not be possible to make appointments at more senior grades, or to exceed the salary advertised.
