PurposeThe Student Engagement Officer supports student success and student visa requirements by monitoring and promoting academic engagement and attendance in line with University and School policies.
The role focuses on early identification of disengagement or barriers to participation in teaching and learning, using engagement data, attendance data, and learner analytics to support timely, practical interventions.
Working collaboratively with academic colleagues, academics, and professional services teams, the postholder provides general engagement support to help students remain connected to their studies, understand academic expectations, and navigate University processes and any visa requirements.
The postholder also provides specific support to students requiring reasonable adjustments to engage with their studies. Where concerns extend beyond academic engagement, the role works in partnership with specialist services to ensure students are supported appropriately.
A core element of the role is to support the consistent operation of engagement monitoring systems and case coordination at School level, ensuring accurate record-keeping, effective communication, and alignment with engagement and reporting requirements. Through early intervention, structured follow-up, and cross-team collaboration, the Student Engagement Officer contributes to improved progression, retention, and an inclusive student experience, particularly for students from under-represented groups as outlined in the Access and Participation Plan.
The role works with relevant Heads of Profession and Communities of Practice relating to Engagement to ensure that academic standards and student experience, and all related visa compliance work are delivered to a common standard in line with set strategic priorities, standards, policy and practice.
ResponsibilitiesYou will play an important role in helping the School deliver an outstanding student experience by coordinating key support and engagement processes, working in partnership with colleagues across the University, and ensuring students can access the support they need at the right time. The role offers a varied mix of relationship building, problem solving, data-informed decision making and process improvement, requiring someone who can confidently manage competing priorities, communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders, and contribute to a culture of inclusion, accountability and continuous improvement
Provide a professional, supportive, and inclusive service to students, ensuringinteractions are timely, accurate, and sensitive to individual circumstances .Act as a first point of contact for reasonable adjustment and engagement related queries, responding in a calm and solution-focused manner. Proactively identify barriers to student engagement. Monitor student engagement, attendance and learner analytics to identify students who may require support. Coordinate engagement-related casework, follow-up actions and communications, maintaining accurate records and ensuring compliance with University policies and visa requirements.
Provide guidance on Student Support Plans and reasonable adjustments, signposting students to specialist services where appropriate. Build effective relationships with academic and professional services colleagues, contribute to School-wide engagement initiatives, and support continuous improvement of processes that enhance student success and retention.
The successful candidate will have experience of providing high-quality student, customer or administrative support in a complex environment. They will possess excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and handle sensitive situations professionally. Strong data management and analytical skills are essential, alongside confidence using digital systems and Microsoft Excel. The ability to work collaboratively, exercise sound judgement, maintain confidentiality, and support inclusive practices and reasonable adjustments is required.
