Role Overview

We are recruiting an adaptable and motivated Generalist Cover Tutor to deliver high-quality education within a custodial environment at HMP Thameside.

As a Generalist Cover Tutor, you will support the delivery of education across multiple curriculum areas, providing engaging and learner-focused teaching that helps individuals develop the knowledge, skills and confidence required for rehabilitation, further learning and future employment.

Working with small groups of prison-based learners, you will play a key role in creating positive learning experiences, supporting achievement and progression, and helping learners overcome barriers to education.

Key Responsibilities Teaching, Learning & Delivery
  • Plan and deliver engaging and inclusive lessons across a range of curriculum areas
  • Adapt teaching approaches to meet individual learner needs, abilities and learning styles
  • Create a positive, supportive and motivating learning environment
  • Promote learner engagement, attendance and achievement
  • Embed literacy, numeracy, digital skills and employability skills within delivery
  • Use a variety of teaching methods and resources to maximise learner participation
Assessment & Learner Progression
  • Conduct initial assessments to identify learner starting points
  • Develop and maintain Individual Learning Plans (ILPs)
  • Monitor learner progress and achievement against agreed targets
  • Carry out formative and summative assessments
  • Prepare learners for internal and external qualifications where appropriate
  • Provide constructive feedback to support development and progression
Learner Support & Personal Development
  • Build learner confidence, resilience and self-esteem
  • Support learners to overcome barriers to learning
  • Work with support teams to ensure appropriate interventions are in place
  • Promote personal development, wellbeing and rehabilitation
  • Encourage learners to set and achieve realistic education, training and employment goals
Quality, Compliance & Administration
  • Maintain accurate learner records, registers and assessment documentation
  • Ensure delivery meets awarding body, contractual and organisational requirements
  • Participate in quality assurance activities including observations and audits
  • Promote safeguarding, equality, diversity and inclusion at all times
  • Comply with prison security requirements, health & safety procedures and data protection standards
Partnership Working & Continuous Improvement
  • Work collaboratively with education colleagues, prison staff and external partners
  • Contribute to curriculum development and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Share best practice and support wider curriculum delivery
  • Participate in team meetings, training and CPD activities
  • Provide curriculum cover and operational support where required
Essential Criteria
  • Level 3 qualifications in English and Maths
  • Teaching qualification at Level 5 or above (PGCE, Cert Ed, DTLLS or equivalent), or willingness to work towards
  • Experience delivering Functional Skills Maths and/or English from Entry Level 1 to Level 2
  • Strong classroom management and learner engagement skills
  • Ability to work effectively with learners from diverse backgrounds
  • Strong organisational, planning and administration skills
  • Experience developing and maintaining ILPs, learner records and progress tracking
  • Good understanding of safeguarding, equality, diversity and health & safety requirements
  • Resilient and professional approach within challenging environments
Desirable Criteria
  • Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) qualification or willingness to achieve
  • Experience with in prison education, further education or adult learning environments
  • Knowledge of the Ofsted Education Inspection Framework (EIF)
  • Experience using BKSB or similar diagnostic assessment tools
  • Experience using digital learning platforms and technology-enhanced learning
  • Experience delivering across multiple curriculum areas
